Airlines increase fees for extra baggage ahead of peak summer season.

Vietjet and Bamboo Airways have just announced adjustments to their additional checked baggage fees. This is a fee charged when passengers purchase extra baggage beyond what is included in their ticket, not the baggage allowance specified in the ticket conditions.

With Vietjet , the fee for additional baggage has increased on both domestic and international routes. On domestic routes, the common increase is 15-25% depending on the package. The 20kg package goes from 200,000 VND to 250,000 VND; the 30kg package from 300,000 VND to 360,000 VND; and the 40kg package from 400,000 VND to 480,000 VND. These prices do not include VAT.

In addition to regular checked baggage, Vietjet has also increased prices for some ancillary services. The fee for oversized baggage (20kg) has increased from 450,000 VND to 540,000 VND; the priority service for an additional 2kg of carry-on baggage has increased from 230,000 VND to 280,000 VND.

On international routes, the increase varies depending on the route. The 20kg package to Southeast Asia increased from 480,000 VND to 580,000 VND. The 30kg package to Hong Kong, Taiwan, and China increased from 880,000 VND to 1,100,000 VND. For some longer routes such as Australia and Central Asia, the 50kg package increased from 4,670,000 VND to 6,300,000 VND.

Bamboo Airways also adjusted domestic baggage fees, but divided them into two price groups: prices applicable throughout the year and prices applicable during peak summer and Tet (Lunar New Year) seasons. During peak periods, baggage packages increased by approximately 15.4%. Specifically, the 10kg package increased from VND 130,000 to VND 150,000; the 20kg package from VND 260,000 to VND 300,000; and the 60kg package from VND 780,000 to VND 900,000.

According to this airline, the peak summer season applies from May 20 to August 15 and from August 27 to September 2, 2026. The peak Tet holiday season lasts from the end of December 2025 to mid-March 2026. Meanwhile, Vietnam Airlines and Pacific Airlines have not yet recorded similar adjustments.

According to the website, pre-paid baggage allowances for both airlines are calculated per piece, with a maximum weight of 23kg and a total three-dimensional size not exceeding 158cm. The price for pre-paid baggage on domestic flights is 300,000 VND per piece, excluding VAT. For international routes during the peak season of 2026, the price ranges from 120 to 230 USD per piece, depending on the route group.

Speaking to Tuổi Trẻ newspaper, a representative from an airline confirmed that there has been an increase in fees. However, this increase does not mean that airlines are raising fees for baggage already included in the ticket price. If the ticket already includes checked baggage, this benefit will still apply according to the ticket conditions. Additional costs only arise when passengers purchase extra baggage beyond the original ticket package.

With budget airlines like Vietjet, many economy class tickets typically only include 7kg of carry-on baggage, with no checked baggage allowance. Therefore, increasing the additional fee will have a more significant impact on groups of travelers going on vacation , returning home, or traveling for extended periods during peak season.

A representative from an airline ticket agency in Ho Chi Minh City said that in recent years, airlines have generally kept basic ticket prices competitive, but increased revenue from ancillary services such as checked baggage, seat selection, and meals.

"Therefore, passengers should carefully check the ticket conditions before paying, because for trips requiring a lot of luggage, the total cost can be significantly higher than the initially displayed ticket price," this person advised.
