A series of solutions to deal with traffic congestion at gateways

Dong Nai authorities have been implementing a series of urgent solutions to limit traffic congestion on key traffic routes through Dong Nai. Currently, some traffic works at the border of Dong Nai province and Ho Chi Minh City are being repaired, causing the above traffic congestion.

From mid-July 2025, a series of projects in the area bordering Dong Nai province with Ho Chi Minh City began repair (expansion joint of Long Thanh bridge on Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh - Dau Giay expressway) or construction (Tan Van intersection under the Investment Project to build Ring Road 3 - Ho Chi Minh City, Ho Chi Minh City area). The construction process has led to congestion at the construction site and neighboring routes in Dong Nai such as: National Highway 51, National Highway 1, Cat Lai ferry, Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh - Dau Giay expressway...

Fast deployment, congestion prevention

To cope with traffic congestion caused by road repair projects, many solutions have been implemented synchronously and promptly by authorities and localities, focusing on announcing alternative routes, organizing traffic regulation and speeding up construction progress. These solutions have demonstrated the proactiveness and efforts of authorities at all levels and functional forces in minimizing the impact of traffic congestion on people's lives.

One of the most important solutions is to clearly publicize information about repair projects and provide alternative routes for road users. The Traffic Police Department of the Provincial Public Security Department recommends 3 alternative routes for cars traveling from National Highway 51 across the Dong Nai River to Ho Chi Minh City (instead of going through the highway under repair). At the same time, Ho Chi Minh City authorities guide vehicles traveling from Dong Nai province to Provincial Road 743 (Ho Chi Minh City) when this section of the road is temporarily closed to serve the construction of Tan Van Interchange under the Investment Project to build Ring Road 3 - Ho Chi Minh City.

Along with that, Vietnam Expressway Technical Services Joint Stock Company is committed to providing and continuously updating full information to the press agencies to ensure that vehicles grasp the traffic situation on the Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh - Dau Giay Expressway. This helps people proactively choose the appropriate route, avoiding going into congested areas.

The Provincial Traffic Police Department has mobilized officers and soldiers to increase traffic regulation at key intersections on National Highway 51 as well as Long Hung Ward, Long Thanh Commune, Nhon Trach Commune... to resolve congestion. Notably, from July 19, the Provincial Traffic Police Department has organized a Volunteer Program on 3 routes to avoid congestion when repairing the Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh - Dau Giay Expressway. During rush hour and weekends, youth union members and women's union members of the Provincial Traffic Police Department will support traffic regulation at 3 intersections along National Highway 51, including: Km2+200, Km4+700 (Long Hung Ward) and Km5+200 (Phuoc Tan Ward). This activity is expected to last until the expressway section is repaired.

For the local government, when traffic congestion in Long Thanh commune increased in recent days, on July 18, the People's Committee of Long Thanh commune issued a document requesting the commune police to arrange more forces to support traffic regulation, especially during rush hours. The functional sector of Long Thanh commune noted to notify about the congestion from a distance, encouraging vehicles to follow suitable alternative routes to reduce the load on the main roads.

Speed up construction to "clear" bottlenecks

Despite the implementation of many solutions, traffic congestion still persists and affects people. People recommend that authorities provide more detailed information about the scope and specific construction time of each project, especially information about lane opening/closing times and road sections with speed restrictions. This information needs to be updated continuously and in a variety of ways (electronic boards, traffic applications, local press agencies) for people to easily access.

Along with that, some residents of Bien Hoa ward, Long Thanh commune, Nhon Trach commune suggested that construction units need to study optimal construction plans to minimize the area of barriers and the number of narrowed lanes. Typically, construction at night, construction during low traffic hours to limit traffic congestion during rush hours in densely populated areas, near industrial parks.

Ms. Le Thi Tam (residing in Long Thanh commune) suggested that it is necessary to increase awareness of traffic law compliance, especially when moving through construction areas. Traffic participants should obey signs, limit speed and give way, avoid jostling and reckless overtaking that cause collisions and congestion.

Faced with the above reality, on July 19, the Vietnam Expressway Corporation said it had asked the construction unit to speed up and make efforts to shorten the construction time of Long Thanh Bridge. The construction unit is working 24/7 and is expected to complete the construction and restore the road surface on July 27, 3 days earlier than the original plan (expected until July 30) if the weather is favorable.

The authorities clearly identifying the causes, correctly assessing the impacts and promptly and effectively implementing anti-congestion solutions is the first step to solving the problem. In the long term, when the above projects are completed, it will help the movement of people and vehicles become more open and convenient, limiting the recurrence of traffic congestion.

The Vietnam Road Administration (Ministry of Construction) said that in the last 6 months of 2025, the agency will coordinate with units under the Ministry of Construction and the Ministry of Finance to complete the transfer of road infrastructure assets to the People's Committees of provinces and cities according to the new decentralized model. At the same time, the agency will receive and operate new expressways, update information on signs according to the new administrative units and complete the road infrastructure planning.
