The new City Hall in Munich
As the capital of the wealthy state of Bavaria, with one of Germany's most glorious histories, Munich is a city that embodies national cultural values, attracting a large number of tourists every year. Like other beautiful European cities, Munich boasts a magnificent array of ancient architectural structures. The Old Town in the heart of Munich is a place where "the essence of culture converges." A visit to Munich wouldn't be complete without strolling through Marienplatz Square – a place often heard of when Bayern Munich celebrates with their fans after winning a championship.
Leaving the subway as dusk fell, our Vietnamese friend, who had lived here for several years, took us to his favorite pub in the Old Town, specifically to enjoy some fresh German beer. As soon as we entered, we were captivated by the music, singing, and lively conversation. Each of us grabbed a 1-liter mug of beer and quickly blended into the lively atmosphere. Indeed, the rich, cold beer perfectly complemented the famous local dishes like roast pork leg, sausages, and sauerkraut. We comfortably recharged our energy, preparing for tomorrow's walking tour of the historic center of Munich.
Traditional German dishes
The warm rays of the early morning sun ignited enthusiasm in the group as they strolled along the cobblestone streets of Munich's Old Town. From afar, the nearly 100-meter-tall bell towers of Notre Dame Cathedral rose majestically with their green spires. Equally striking was the large building with its red tiled roof, capable of holding thousands of people. This building has also been the site of many major events, such as royal weddings and funerals, and remains a center of Munich's cultural and religious life. Despite numerous historical upheavals and damage during World War II, meticulous restoration and effective preservation efforts have ensured its continued pride among the people of Munich, making it a symbol of the city. We reserved the late morning hours, under a clear blue sky, to climb the bell tower and admire Munich from above. This experience is quite a hit-or-miss for tourists because on a sunny day, Munich seems to sparkle, and the pointed roofs of many Gothic-style buildings become even more magnificent.
The old and new town halls are also notable landmarks when visiting Marienplatz. The old Altes Rathaus, built in the 15th century in the Gothic style, is smaller than the new one, but its elegant and antique beauty captivates everyone who sees it. The architect Jörg von Halsbach, who designed this old town hall, is also the creator of the masterpiece Notre Dame Cathedral. Currently, the building houses a museum displaying whimsical toys such as dolls and cartoon characters.
The new town hall in the Neo-Gothic style.
Replacing the Altes Rathaus in 1874 was the new Neue Rathaus, a Neo-Gothic town hall with a facade over 100 meters long. The image of the powerful Wittelsbach dynasty adorning the front of the building is enough for posterity to understand the power and contributions of this royal family to Munich. Thanks to their love of science and technology, and their emphasis on creativity and innovation, these Bavarian kings left behind a treasure trove of magnificent architectural works for posterity. The new town hall features a towering clock tower in the center along with exquisite sculptures. Currently, many of the rooms are still used as offices for government agencies, some businesses, and as a venue for many major city events. Some rooms are dedicated to providing tourist information and guided tours; visitors need to purchase tickets for specific guidance. There are many other beautiful buildings that contribute to the harmonious overall design of Munich's Old Town, and if visitors want to explore it in depth, they should spend time wandering through the small streets.
To explore the everyday side of the city, one cannot overlook the charming little eateries, cafes, and markets next to the square – where visitors can easily find cheeses, sausages, or sample wines. True to German character, all products and services are meticulously prepared, careful, and reliable. These things contributed to making our trip to Munich worthwhile and memorable for each of us.
