Following its developer preview release in November 2024 and beta release in January 2025, Android 16 is expected to reach consumers soon.
Google is expected to release the final version of Android 16 in May or June 2025. However, to date, this update has not brought many new features to users.
Despite numerous improvements for developers, exciting changes for users remain limited.
Things seem to be turning positive after Google released Android 16 Beta 3 on March 13th, which incorporates several attractive new features similar to what Apple did with iOS 19.
The most notable change is the revamped Quick Settings interface. Instead of displaying notifications and Quick Settings on the same page as before, Android 16 will split them into two separate pages. This allows users to more easily access notifications and quick settings.
The new Quick Settings interface is also very impressive. With its vertical scrolling design, users can see more toggle switches on the screen.
While Android 15 only displayed 8 buttons, Android 16 will allow up to 16 buttons to be displayed simultaneously. Google is also experimenting with new button sizes and designs to provide users with more options.
Android 16 will add the ability to customize app icon shapes, allowing users to choose from six different designs. This is a major step forward in improving customization options for Pixel Launcher – something users have long awaited.
Additionally, lock screen widgets are more interesting as they allow users to customize the lock screen to display useful information such as to-do lists or upcoming calendar events.
While Android 16 isn't the most groundbreaking update, the improvements show that Google is striving to provide a better user experience.
More details about the changes included in Android 16 will be announced at the Google I/O event in May 2025.
