Stories about organ donors in recent times have conveyed a strong energy about the most noble human act.
Organ Donation: A Touching Story of Life and Hope
On the morning of March 9, the family of Trinh Nhat Minh (18 years old, Hanoi) learned that their son had a traffic accident and was taken to Viet Duc Hospital for emergency treatment. At that time, Minh's father was a soldier working in the mountainous Northwest region, his mother had a young child, was not in good health, and their house was far from the hospital so they could not come immediately.
Ms. Trinh Thi Thu, Minh’s aunt, was informed at the hospital that her son was brain dead. “I couldn’t believe it and it was very difficult to tell my brother…”, Ms. Thu said.
Upon arriving in Hanoi, Minh’s father did not cry, but his voice was choked up. After the doctor discussed his son’s condition, he went out and told everyone, “I want to donate Minh’s organs to save people, and I hope the family will support me.”
“At first, some people did not agree with organ donation, because everyone felt sorry for him. But my brother told us to respect his decision, he wanted to do something useful for society even though his child was gone,” Thu said.
Everyone in the family gradually realized that, even though Minh was no longer here, he could still continue to “live” in another person’s body, bringing life to others. And that was the most meaningful thing.
Also a reporter, Ms. Thu has written many times about families donating organs after brain death. However, when things happened to the family, she still could not believe it was true.
“He has left but his heart still beats, his breath continues in other bodies. That is how Minh left a beautiful mark in this life,” Thu said, choking up.
After Minh's family agreed to donate organs to save lives, the Organ Coordination and Transplant Center of Viet Duc Hospital performed the surgery. Minh gave four other people a chance to live. Currently, the transplants are successful, the health of the recipients is responding well, and their health is recovering.
Ms. Thu shared: "Our family donated his organs and has only one wish for those who receive his organs: Please cherish and live a brilliant life...
I wish the recipients of my child's organs would write
"Follow your dreams, love, contribute, enjoy every moment of life."
Perhaps Ms. Thu’s wish is also the wish of many other families who agree to donate their loved ones’ organs after brain death. And thanks to that noble gesture, lives are being revived.
Thanks to organ donation, Thinh was able to go to school.
Having received a heart from a brain-dead donor, the successful heart transplant surgery marked a turning point in the life of Nguyen Huu Truong Thinh (14 years old, Binh Thuan).
Thinh was diagnosed with heart disease when he was only 4 months old. Thinh's family was not well off, his father was a teacher - the only breadwinner. His mother had a traffic accident in 2014 and was paralyzed. For many years, he had to go in and out of the hospital, undergoing two surgeries to stay alive.
Luck smiled on Thinh when he was assigned a heart transplant - the only hope for him to continue living. The heart transplant was successful, bringing a miraculous revival to the resilient teenager.
Having escaped the jaws of death, Thinh's greatest wish was simply to go to school with his peers. The months in bed made him yearn more than ever to go to school, to study and to fulfill his unfinished dream.
Truong Thinh is continuing to write his life story - a story of perseverance, extraordinary willpower and belief in a bright future.
And Thinh is also continuing the unfinished dream of organ donors, who have brought hope of life to those who were close to death.
The stories of Minh, the giver, and Thinh, the recipient, will continue to be written as the organ donation movement is increasingly accepted and spread by the community.
