Among the streets where sidewalks and median strips are planned to be narrowed are Giang Vo, Lang Ha, Le Van Luong, and To Huu. These are streets located along the BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) route, and the current condition of their sidewalks and median strips presents many problems.
| During morning and evening rush hours, commuters are all too familiar with the sight of vehicles lining up across the road, completely blocking the BRT bus lanes. |
The express bus struggled to move along its dedicated lane. Both the front and rear of the bus were surrounded by other vehicles. |
The sidewalk on To Huu Street has been repurposed as a place to sell fruits. |
At a BRT bus stop on Le Van Luong Street, the lane divider barriers were disabled. Many motorcyclists squeezed into the BRT lane to escape traffic congestion or to "conveniently" turn left. |
Meanwhile, the sidewalks along Le Van Luong Street are very spacious and are used for parking cars and motorbikes. |
Cars line up along the sidewalk like a public parking lot, despite a "no parking" sign nearby. The wide sidewalk also serves as an "escape route" for motorbike drivers whenever the road is congested. |
Sidewalks in this area are also being "used" as dumping grounds for garbage, detracting from the urban aesthetics. |
A similar situation occurred on Giang Vo Street. In front of the D2 Giang Vo building complex, a long line of cars was parked on the sidewalk. As soon as one car left, another immediately took its place. |
Even when the road is clear, many people still ride motorbikes into the BRT lane. One passenger, after getting off the bus, went straight onto the road. |
The Hanoi Department of Transport has just requested the Hanoi People's Committee and the Department of Planning and Investment to appraise and submit to the competent authority for approval the investment policy for a project to urgently improve infrastructure and organize traffic at several intersections and roads to minimize congestion.
The project has a total estimated investment of nearly 225 billion VND, funded by the state budget, of which construction costs account for over 188 billion VND; the project implementation period is from 2024 to 2027.
The Department of Transport plans to narrow sidewalks and median strips at eligible locations on Giang Vo, Lang Ha, Le Van Luong, To Huu, Hoang Dao Thuy, Hoang Minh Giam, and Khuat Duy Tien streets. These are all routes with particularly high traffic density and frequent congestion during peak hours.
In particular, Giang Vo, Lang Ha, Le Van Luong, and To Huu streets, which are part of the BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) route, are central traffic arteries that frequently experience traffic congestion.
