Vietnam has implemented 16 free trade agreements (FTAs) and is continuing to negotiate FTAs in the coming time. Of these, EVFTA is one of the most comprehensive and new generation FTAs that Vietnam has signed.
After the EVFTA was implemented (effective from August 2020), the value of Vietnam's goods exports to the EU market has continuously increased over the years and ranked first in Southeast Asia. According to data provided by the Customs Department, in 4 years (from August 2020 to the end of 2024), Vietnam's export turnover to the EU market was more than 200 billion USD, growing from 12 - 15%. The growth is clearly shown in areas such as electronics, textiles, footwear, agriculture and seafood according to the tariff reduction roadmap when this EVFTA comes into effect.

Particularly for Dak Lak, in 2024, the province's export turnover to the EU market will reach nearly 1.9 billion USD; of which agricultural products account for 93 - 95% with key products being coffee, cashew, pepper, vegetables, etc. According to the representative of the Department of Industry and Trade, EVFTA has opened up great opportunities for many enterprises in the province to promote export activities, increase revenue, and contribute to local economic development.
Taking advantage of tariff incentives and market opportunities brought by EVFTA, PM Coffee Company Limited (Thanh Nhat Ward, Buon Ma Thuot City) has increased coffee exports to the EU market. Mr. Nguyen Dinh Vien, Director of the Company, said that EVFTA has helped the company open up the market and increase its competitive advantage in the international market. Thanks to the ability to supply and meet standards (quality, packaging, traceability, etc.), the company's annual export activities have always maintained growth momentum. Currently, the company's products have been distributed in almost all EU member countries, with an output of about 80,000 tons of green coffee in 2024.
"EVFTA not only opens the door to the EU market but is also a "push" to promote the province's agricultural sector to restructure towards a more modern, transparent and sustainable direction. The province is stepping up support for businesses to build international standard raw material areas, develop product brands and promote exports with focus. In the long term, the province will build a technical support - EVFTA promotion center to accompany local businesses in their journey to conquer the European market" - Mr. , Deputy Director of Department of Industry and Trade |
According to trade experts, in the context of many fluctuations in the international market, especially tariff barriers from other markets such as the US, diversifying export markets has become more urgent than ever. In particular, the EU has emerged as a potential destination and EVFTA is considered an important "lever" to help Dak Lak's agricultural products penetrate deeper into this market. However, to make the most of the advantages and opportunities that EVFTA brings, managers and businesses need to develop appropriate strategies to quickly meet the regulations and standards of importing countries.
At the workshop "EVFTA - Strategy for Dak Lak agricultural products to conquer the EU in the context of global market fluctuations in 2025" held at the end of May, senior consultant of the Government Office Nguyen Thanh Hung stated that EVFTA provides deep and wide tariff cuts for Vietnamese agricultural products.
However, to be able to boost the export of agricultural products to the EU in the coming time, enterprises need to fully meet technical requirements, food safety and hygiene, apply science and technology to production and processing processes to standardize products according to market requirements, and apply new EU standards related to labor fairness, environmental protection, and social responsibility.
On the part of state management agencies from central to local levels, it is necessary to perfect mechanisms and policies to support legal, financial, technological and trade promotion issues to create favorable conditions for enterprises to enter standard production, meeting international standards.

In particular, in the context of widespread counterfeit, fake and intellectual property-infringing goods that can easily damage reputation and brand, businesses need to proactively register intellectual property protection for their products before entering international markets such as the EU to avoid risks and economic losses.
Ms. Dao Thuy Hoan, Director of Ecolaw Law Firm (a unit specializing in legal consulting for enterprises, foreign investment and intellectual property) said that intellectual property is an intangible asset, so enterprises must register for protection to confirm their intellectual property rights, otherwise they will be blocked right on the way to the foreign market. Therefore, when enterprises need to register intellectual property protection for products, they can seek advice and support from units such as the Department of Science and Technology, law firms to do the procedures to minimize time and unnecessary costs.
