According to the Ministry of Construction , the La Son - Hoa Lien expressway expansion project has a short construction time of only about 8 months, while the total length of the route is up to 66km, connecting Hue city with Da Nang city. In addition, the project is being implemented on an already operational road, making traffic safety and construction work challenging.

This project is of strategic importance in completing the infrastructure of the Central Vietnam key economic region. Therefore, contractors must allocate sufficient supplies, materials, manpower, equipment, and finances to complete the construction items and disburse funds according to the emulation agreement.

Mr. Nguyen Vu Quy, Director of the Ho Chi Minh Highway Project Management Board (the project's investor), said that currently, 15 pile foundation construction teams are simultaneously working on 15 bridges. Six girder casting yards are being completed and will be ready for mass production in July.

The road section currently has eight excavation and embankment teams working on widening the roadbed. The contractor is stockpiling stone to begin laying crushed stone base course from the end of June 2025 for sections with the K98 soil layer completed. With the spirit of "overcoming the sun and rain," the "3 shifts, 4 teams" is not just a slogan but a daily reality on the construction site. Contractors and construction units are striving to overcome difficulties to achieve the committed goals.

Meanwhile, according to the construction unit's representative, we have mobilized 15 construction teams along the entire route, hundreds of officials, engineers, and workers, along with many modern machines and equipment, continuously deployed to ensure progress. At the same time, we have allocated sufficient manpower, working three shifts continuously, and strictly controlling technical standards in each item. We are not only focused on meeting deadlines but also on ensuring the quality of the project, labor safety, traffic safety, and environmental hygiene; especially during the dry season when construction is being accelerated along the entire route. In particular, we are ensuring that the construction does not affect the daily lives of people living along the route.

Reportedly, following the direction of the Ministry of Construction, the Ho Chi Minh Highway Project Management Board is currently directing the Project Management Board, the Project Director, and Project Management Office 5 (under the Board) to closely monitor, direct, manage, and supervise construction at the site; promptly resolve and remove difficulties and obstacles to create favorable conditions for the contractor to complete the plan...

Previously, the Ho Chi Minh Highway section from La Son to Hoa Lien, with two lanes, was constructed, completed, and put into operation in April 2022. The project has proven effective in reducing congestion on National Highway 1A and improving connectivity between Hue and Da Nang cities, as well as the Central region. However, with only two lanes and operating like an expressway (excluding motorcycles and non-motorized vehicles), this remains a bottleneck, prompting local authorities to propose expanding it to four lanes in the near future.

Upon completion, the La Son - Hoa Lien expressway expansion project will contribute to gradually completing the planned transportation infrastructure, ensuring synchronization and modernity; enhancing operational capacity, minimizing traffic accidents, and promoting the role of the eastern North-South expressway in connecting localities, ensuring national defense and security in the region and the entire country.

The project also contributes to improving the operational capacity of the La Son - Hoa Lien expressway in particular, along with the Cam Lo - La Son and Da Nang - Quang Ngai expressways; and enhancing the overall operational capacity of the North-South expressway. The early completion and upgrading of the La Son - Hoa Lien expressway to a 4-lane standard will significantly contribute to connecting the North-South axis, increasing traffic capacity, reducing traffic accidents, and improving the efficiency of national transportation infrastructure.

The project has a total investment of 3,000 billion VND. Construction is expected to be completed 240 days after commencement (May 29, 2025). The expressway design follows the existing La Son - Hoa Lien route, ensuring the technical requirements of the road class, maximizing the use of existing roadbed and surface structures, and minimizing land acquisition. The project will utilize the existing 12 bridges along the route, which already have a 4-lane capacity; and construct new bridge sections or expand 50 bridges along the route to ensure a 4-lane capacity.
