Next season, one of Trent Alexander-Arnold or Dani Carvajal will have to sit on the bench. This is not an easy problem for coach Xabi Alonso, because one is a promising rookie, the other has been a mainstay for many years at Real Madrid.
According to AS , Alonso and the Real Madrid coaching staff are considering a short-term solution of rotation, but it is inevitable that one of the two players will play more. In other words, in the end, Alonso will have to choose between Alexander-Arnold or Carvajal, who will play a more important role when the club enters a crucial period.
Stability in defence is always important, and Real Madrid cannot afford to rotate their right-back position constantly. At the moment, no one dares to say for sure that Alexander-Arnold or Carvajal will start. Trent has the advantage of youth and creativity, but Carvajal is a Madrid legend with experience and character.
Nearly a year ago, Carvajal suffered one of the worst injuries of his career, tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, damaging the lateral ligament and tendons. Carvajal did not give up, however, and returned to the Club World Cup, showing incredible form in training.
However, in Alonso's system, full-backs need to have the mindset of a midfielder. That role is more suitable for Trent than Carvajal. If he chooses the former Liverpool star, the Real Madrid captain will need to talk to Carvajal to stabilize the dressing room.
