Miss Earth is an international beauty pageant that has been held since 2001 with the aim of raising environmental awareness.

Miss Earth 2023 with the message "Unique Bonds - One Planet" (roughly translated: Together for a green Earth) took place in Vietnam this year. The spirit of joining hands to build the earth, together to protect the environment, and rationally exploit resources so that life and beauty will last forever was expressed by the beauties through meaningful competitions and exciting activities.

• ENVIRONMENTAL PROJECTS

The strong environmental spirit of Miss Earth was demonstrated through the Best Eco Project competition in the semi-finals. Miss Earth contestants were divided into 4 teams corresponding to the continents: Europe, Asia and Oceania, Africa, America to present and introduce environmental protection projects.

The beauties from Africa have given interesting analysis and solutions to the problem of climate change. Climate change is not a problem of planet Earth, but of all humanity. We have built modern cities and factories, but we have not built proper waste management systems to prevent pollution. We have built millions of miles of roads, but we have not planted enough trees to absorb rainfall and combat drought. Deforestation is a global problem, we lose 10 million hectares of forest every year due to logging, urbanization and agriculture ...

Initiatives such as the African Green Industry Initiative, the African Green Fence, tree planting... are all aimed at protecting the environment over a large area of land.

The beauties - with their influence and reach, will call for the construction of projects to donate fruit trees to communities, especially rural communities and seedlings to schools. At the same time, they will guide how to care for and nurture these gardens. Along with the cultivation is the process of connecting the community with potential markets to develop the economy ...

Both the European and American teams chose sustainable fashion as their theme. Fashion is a significant carbon emitter globally, along with water consumption and pollution. We need to rethink the way we think about fashion. The solution needs to be at three levels: government, business and individuals. Some simple but impactful legislation could be implemented, such as proposing a minimum sustainability standard for all clothing sold, much like there are safety standards for other goods. Companies should also encourage circular fashion by offering repair services, safe disposal of old products and donations.

As individuals, the simplest thing we can do is consume less. Instead, we can recycle by re-wearing the clothes we already have. We can rethink the brands we support by buying from independent, ethical and sustainable designers and brands...

The Asia and Oceania team brought the idea of recycling plastic waste and building a public library by using plastic bottles to sow seeds to grow plants, created as a work of art and introduced to tourists, so that green shoots can reach many regions and areas on Earth...

• TOWARDS ECOLOGICAL CITIES

Along with environmental protection activities in Ho Chi Minh City such as participating in Tourism Week, planting trees, learning about mangrove forests, learning about building green hotels...; The Organizing Committee of Miss Earth 2023 has chosen Da Lat as the location to organize 5 important competitions of the contest in the semi-finals with the Best Environmental Project, Talent; especially 3 contents including: Traditional costume, swimsuit and national costume taking place on the main stage of Van Thanh flower village.

Ms. Truong Ngoc Anh - Head of the Organizing Committee of Miss Earth 2023, General Director of TNA Entertainment shared: "I really want to promote the beauty of Vietnam and that is why we chose Da Lat and Van Thanh flower village as the venue for the semi-finals". Miss Earth wants to introduce to the world the efforts to build a nature-friendly living environment, the sustainable development of Da Lat - a city on the journey to become an ecological urban area.

Subtle and graceful, the Colombian beauty seemed to say a friendly hello to the environment when wearing a dress made from pineapple fiber and dyed with natural materials, as a way to express the desire that sustainable development is completely feasible, a balance between economy, society and environment.

Appearing at Dalat University - a school located in the middle of the vast green pine forest, the topic of environmental protection continued to be discussed enthusiastically by the beauties with perspectives and views on the mission of environmental protection.

That mission has been throughout the journey, elevated with the soaring fashion, introducing the identity and culture of each country through the performance of beautiful, colorful national costumes made from environmentally friendly and recycled materials in the semi-final night.

The contents of Miss Earth 2023 are sometimes explosive, sometimes climaxing, sometimes making a strong impression, sometimes more leisurely with side activities, and all seem to move towards the sparkling central point of the Miss Earth crown: to preserve the environment, and cherish the green color bestowed by Mother Nature.

And in that green color, there is a poetic Xuan Huong lake, a vibrant Van Thanh flower village, a Lam Ha coffee garden with ripe red coffee... so that friends from all over the world remember a city where Miss Earth once left her footprints.
