- When did the idea to create the "Spring of Independence" artworks come to you?

- Around 2017, while studying abroad, knowing that my family in Vietnam was researching the production of large-format lacquerware, I envisioned a painting project connected to the nation's history. Two years later, when the first panels were completed, I immediately began researching and sketching. By 2019, upon returning to Vietnam, I dedicated all my efforts to this series of paintings.

I didn't set a fixed timeframe, I just knew I needed perseverance and patience. Together with my colleagues, we worked diligently for nearly seven years. It was both an artistic journey and a journey of personal growth for me, from a painting student to a young artist who understands my responsibility to history and to my country.

- As a young artist from the 90s generation who has never experienced war, why did you choose to create artwork about revolution and leaders?

- Patriotism and respect for history have been instilled in me since childhood through my family, school, and society. My grandfather, Chu Manh Chan, was a People's Artist and painter who painted many revolutionary-themed pictures. My father, Chu Luong, was a Meritorious Artist who dedicated his life to puppet theater. In that environment, I grew up with memories of art intertwined with history.

Studying abroad has made me appreciate even more the value of independence and freedom. Living in peace is a legacy left by our ancestors. I want to use my creativity to express my gratitude and to recount stories that I never witnessed but always felt sacred to me.

For me, lacquer is not just an artistic material. It is also the soul of East Asia, enduring, vibrant, and capable of spreading throughout a large space. I want to use this traditional material to depict the golden pages of our nation's history.

- Creating large-scale lacquer paintings must be quite challenging, right?

- Small paintings can be made in a sealed chamber, but large-scale paintings are entirely handcrafted, dependent on weather and humidity. From transporting the enormous canvases to surface treatment, every step requires skill and physical effort.

I've experimented extensively, from researching the base material and applying resins to prevent warping, to incorporating new materials like abalone shells, refined gold leaf, and anti-oxidant silver leaf... Each improvement aims to ensure the paintings are durable and can be displayed for a long time, even in harsh conditions or outdoors. My guiding principle throughout the creative process is to remain faithful to tradition while finding new directions so that lacquer paintings truly enter the contemporary space.

- Among the paintings in the collection, the work "Uncle Ho Reading the Declaration of Independence" has been recognized by the Guinness World Records as the world's largest monolithic, unjoined lacquer painting. Could you share the creative process behind this work?

- This is the largest painting in the "Spring of Independence" exhibition. The artwork is 7.2 meters long, 2.4 meters high, weighs 3 tons, and is double-sided. One side depicts the moment President Ho Chi Minh read the Declaration of Independence at Ba Dinh Square on September 2, 1945. The other side, titled "Spring of the Nation," portrays the image of the entire nation joyfully celebrating Independence Day.

The double-sided painting project began in late 2019, starting with assembling the canvas into a single block before painting. During the research process, I visited many historical sites, consulted with historians, and met with local people to hear stories associated with each place. These experiences gave me a sense of space, genuine emotion, and further strengthened my resolve to complete the artwork.

- How did you feel when your work was recognized as a Guinness World Record?

- Upon hearing the announcement, my heart was filled with pride and gratitude. I thought of my family – those who have supported and encouraged me through every difficulty. I am grateful to my colleagues. The collaboration, creativity, and shared passion for lacquer art of everyone have elevated this project far beyond what I ever imagined. Furthermore, the support of the Ho Chi Minh Museum and the encouragement of scientists and leaders have transformed my personal dream into a collective effort of national significance.

- What is the greatest significance of this record for you?

- For me, what matters is the message the painting conveys, spreading it to the world. This painting has become a visual tribute to the nation's journey and the enduring legacy of President Ho Chi Minh. This achievement is not just about setting a record, but also about sharing the Vietnamese spirit with the world. Through this painting, I hope that international friends can feel the pride, resilience, and beauty of the Vietnamese people.

I hope they will be inspired by the story of President Ho Chi Minh – who continues to guide us with his clarity and unwavering belief: Vietnam is a resilient, indomitable nation with a rich cultural tradition.

I also hope that today's young generation understands that, in any field, if we have passion and dare to take risks, we can all contribute to our country. Guinness World Records are not the destination. They are merely the beginning of dissemination, of profound cultural exchanges, and of a greater love for Vietnamese heritage.

- We sincerely thank artist Chu Nhat Quang!
