Tran Nguyet, originally a graphic designer and graduate of the Hanoi University of Industrial Fine Arts, entered the world of painting in 2014 with a foundation in modern visual art and a minimalist approach to composition. Watercolors and silk are the materials that best allow the artist to express her inner world and artistic personality.

The subject matter in the artist's watercolors mainly revolves around still life, flowers, and the simple beauty of everyday life. Her paintings impress with their clarity, tranquility, and serenity. From small vases and delicate branches to simple still-life compositions, they all seem to capture unique emotional moments, allowing viewers to sense the artist's subtlety, depth, and rich inner soul.

Watercolor paintings offer a powerful evocative effect for the viewer.

Her paintings retain a delicate, gentle quality with naturally blended layers of color creating a sense of fragility. The composition is restrained and simple yet rich in visual rhythm, showing that her graphic design background has clearly influenced her artistic thinking. What remains is the unique atmosphere that her paintings convey, full of depth and femininity. It can be said that Tran Nguyet's watercolor paintings have helped the artist find a balance between visual and inner feelings.

Unlike watercolors, Tran Nguyet's silk paintings sometimes evoke images reminiscent of silk art from previous generations: quiet figures, restrained composition, space, and an introspective spirit.

Nevertheless, this similarity is like a layer of visual memory re-perceived through the lens of a new era. While traditional silk paintings often emphasize conventional beauty, harmony, and the symbolic nature of human figures, Tran Nguyet approaches the characters with a personal perspective, closer to contemporary inner life.

Familiar images—such as the woman sitting silently, her pensive expression, or the stillness surrounding the character—reappear, but they are no longer illustrative or idealized. Instead, the images are placed in an ambiguous state, as if they both belong to reality and drift within memory.

What makes the difference lies in the perspective. Tran Nguyet sees this as a starting point to delve deeper into contemporary human emotions. The characters in her paintings don't belong to a fixed symbolic system but always carry with them uncertainty, loneliness, and moments of silence that are distinctly personal.

In Tran Nguyet's silk paintings, traces of the previous generation are subtly present in the aesthetic foundation, expanded upon and, most importantly, re-perceived through present-day experience. As a result, these seemingly familiar images do not simply repeat the past but become a dialogue, a new and different perspective.

Besides the sense of tranquility that has become a hallmark of her work, there is a more elusive nuance in the artist's paintings: a dreamy, sometimes dreamlike state.

This doesn't seem to be a technical or compositional ambiguity, but rather a state of mind permeating the entire painting. Her characters, whether standing, sitting, or appearing only briefly, always seem to be drifting gently in a stream of thought, not fully connected to reality. Their gaze is often not directed at the viewer, but rather wanders to some distant point.

A different perspective inspired by the past.

This "unanchored" state creates a unique sense of dreaminess, as if the character is both present and slowly drifting away from the present. The space in the painting therefore loses its clear definition, appearing as if a thin layer of mist has settled over the image, making everything seem soft, distant, and sometimes leaning more towards memory than reality.

Viewers standing before the paintings easily feel as if they are entering a semi-conscious, dreamlike state with the images shifting. In some works, this dreamlike feeling is even more pronounced. This element allows Tran Nguyet's paintings to transcend the boundaries of depicting everyday life, filtering through memory, emotion, and mental state.

This sense of languidness also creates a unique rhythm throughout the artist's work. There are no clear climaxes, no strong focal points; everything flows like a slow stream, allowing the viewer to "drift" along with the painting.

However, Tran Nguyet's creative journey in painting wasn't always a stable and continuous flow. Like many artists who delve into their inner selves, she went through periods of great contemplation, even moments of confusion about her artistic choices and her life in general.

That period was like a time of reflection. When images haven't yet found their own clear voice, and technique is no longer sufficient to satisfy the inner questions, painting becomes an even more special space.

In that state of confusion, Tran Nguyet's paintings gradually transformed. From focusing on external observation, she began to delve deeper into the layers of ambiguous emotions.

Looking back now, it's clear that all the changes haven't been erased, but bear the marks of the journey, filled with doubt and self-reflection. However, instead of becoming burdensome, everything has been transformed into a calmer perspective and a lighter expression.

At this point in time, Tran Nguyet's painting can be seen as a distilled state, no longer a frantic search for answers, but rather an acceptance of the ambiguity as synonymous with the natural part of creativity and life.

Having overcome her initial confusion, her paintings gain greater depth because behind the apparent tranquility lies an inner journey marked by constant wavering and questioning. Once things have calmed down, her art becomes clear in its silence, its profound stillness, and its ability to capture the most subtle layers of emotion.
