If you know how to seize the opportunity...
In the context of international businesses promoting investment in Vietnam, Dr. Truong Gia Quyen, Deputy Head of the Chinese Language Department at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Ho Chi Minh City, said that human resources in foreign language majors, especially Chinese language majors, have more job opportunities than ever. "The future is wide open for those who seize the opportunity," Dr. Quyen commented.
Dr. Truong Gia Quyen, Deputy Head of the Chinese Language and Literature Department at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Ho Chi Minh City, said that students majoring in Chinese language have many job opportunities in the context of Chinese enterprises promoting investment in Vietnam.
Through surveys with many businesses, Mr. Quyen believes that in order to "firmly stand" in the labor market, students must first have fluent foreign language and translation skills, because good foreign language skills will be a bridge for businesses to provide further training. Two equally important factors are the ability to apply professional knowledge to practical work, as well as soft skills, followed by honesty, diligence and a sense of responsibility.
"In the final years, students need to develop a specific career orientation to take the corresponding professional certification exam if any. Accordingly, in addition to teaching and translation, foreign language students are also welcomed in roles such as tour guides, flight attendants, diplomatic officers...", Dr. Quyen shared at the international cultural exchange festival at Nova College (HCMC) on July 8.

In addition, Mr. Nguyen Tuan Anh, representative of the Association for International Exchange inEducation and Health (Japan), said that Japanese language students have a "privilege" when participating in the international internship program in Japan. "In addition to specialized jobs, you can also apply for all other industries such as automobiles, information technology... as translators for Vietnamese interns," Mr. Tuan Anh informed.
Speaking to Thanh Nien Newspaper reporter, Master Nguyen Thi Ngoc Quyen, Principal of Nova College, acknowledged that the proliferation of foreign language majors is an inevitable trend in international integration. "If in the past, students in this major often stopped at teaching, now career opportunities have expanded not only in international companies in Vietnam, but also in the Southeast Asian market," Ms. Quyen emphasized.
Students perform cultural performances imbued with the culture of the countries whose languages they are studying.

According to Master Quyen, the prejudice that "only students in this major can do this job" is gradually being removed as the market becomes more internationalized. Accordingly, students majoring in foreign languages can now participate in fields such as international tourism, commerce, and education management. "These are also 3 fields that are thirsty for human resources in this industry," said Ms. Quyen.
"Therefore, in addition to being proficient in foreign language knowledge and skills, you also need to supplement your specialized knowledge to meet recruitment requirements. In addition, you should also boldly step out of Vietnam and go to the country whose language you are studying to improve your language, and at the same time learn the culture directly from them to gain more practical experience, serving your work better," added Master Quyen.
Factors in cultural diplomacy
From another perspective, Mr. Mai Anh Thai, Director of the Center for Training and Fostering Diplomacy and Foreign Language Knowledge (Ministry of Foreign Affairs), said that foreign language students are a "piece" in cultural diplomacy activities between Vietnam and other countries, and this is also an opportunity for them to develop themselves and their future careers because foreign languages are one of the tools of cultural diplomacy.
According to Mr. Mai Anh Thai, foreign language students have many opportunities to participate in cultural diplomacy activities.
"During their studies, students can organize cultural exchanges with different topics, such as literature, to find common points and humanistic values between Vietnamese and foreign works. Or they can participate in cultural exchange activities on the sidelines of diplomatic commemorative events as support volunteers," Mr. Thai suggested.
However, Mr. Thai also noted that students must have "good internal strength" so as not to lose their Vietnamese identity when participating in the academic environment and performing cultural diplomacy. Specifically, in addition to the material and spiritual values that exist within and have been passed down through many generations, students must also learn and cultivate more of Vietnam's good cultural values to have the best mindset for exchange.

To choose the right job
Before "closing" on a future job, Dr. Gia Quyen advises foreign language students to understand both the business and themselves.
In terms of business, you need to pay attention to the company being clear about operations and recruitment, not requiring keeping original documents, degrees or deposits, as well as having a transparent and legal interview process and labor contract.
"As for yourself, you need to determine your personality and desired goals, evaluate whether your skills, expertise and knowledge are suitable for the job, and refer to development opportunities, environment, salary, benefits... in the industry you are interested in. At the same time, evaluate yourself based on the KSA model (knowledge, skill, attitude)," said Mr. Quyen.
