Final year students take advantage of Tet holiday to review for exams

Although the Lunar New Year holiday lasts 14 days, Thanh Phan only took three full days off, spending the rest of the time practicing exam questions for various subjects and preparing for the two university entrance exams in March.

Thanh Phan, a 12th-grade student in Phu Tho , had a Tet holiday from February 5th to 18th (26th of the 12th lunar month to 9th of the 1st lunar month). After visiting relatives with her family to wish them a happy new year, from the morning of the 2nd day of Tet, Phan took care of the house while her parents and older brother went out to celebrate, and then took the opportunity to study.

"I maintain a daily practice routine, completing at least one practice test for 1-2 subjects each day, and then reviewing the material. I'm afraid I'll lose my study habits if I take a long break," Phan said.

Aiming for admission to two top universities, Hanoi University of Science and Technology and the University of Natural Sciences - Vietnam National University, Hanoi, Phan has not dared to neglect his studies since the end of 11th grade. In early March, Phan will participate in the aptitude and cognitive assessment exams of these two universities. The exam structure includes hundreds of questions covering Mathematics, Literature, and natural sciences (Physics, Chemistry, etc.). Therefore, in addition to practicing with past high school graduation exam papers, Phan is also familiarizing himself with the questions from these separate exams and reading books and newspapers to broaden his knowledge.

"With all the important exams coming up, I can't feel at ease if I don't study for 14 days," Phan shared.

Many students also diligently reviewed their lessons during the Tet holiday. Hoang Minh Thu, a student in class 9A6 at Sai Dong Secondary School in Hanoi , said that before the 8-day Tet holiday (February 7-14), she received a stack of assignments including 15 English test papers and two math worksheets, also with 15 problems.

"Even if the teachers don't give assignments, I'll study on my own, because I'm afraid I'll forget what I've learned if I don't touch my books during the whole holiday," Thu said. She explained that she has to study hard because she has her mid-term exams for the second semester about three weeks after the Tet holiday, and most importantly, the 10th grade entrance exam in early June. Thu is considering putting Phuc Loi High School or Cao Ba Quat High School as her first choice, as they usually require an average of 7.55 and 7.65 points per subject. However, there was a time when she only scored 7 points on each mock exam, which worried her.

Thu has completed most of her homework on the 28th and 29th of the lunar month, and plans to finish the rest on the 5th.

According to Mr. Nguyen Quang Tung, principal of MV Lomonosov Secondary and High School in Hanoi, based on his observations over the years, almost every graduating class has students like Phan and Thu.

"Many 12th and 9th graders are under pressure to get into universities or top-tier high schools, especially those from disadvantaged families, who have to study hard to get into public schools," Mr. Tung said.

Additionally, some students study throughout the Tet holiday due to immense pressure from their parents – parents who have high expectations and have invested heavily in their children's education but are still not satisfied with the results. However, there are also students who take advantage of the Tet holiday to review because they are self-motivated, studious, or have homework assignments during this time.

According to Mr. Nguyen Cao Cuong, principal of Thai Thinh Secondary School in Dong Da district, Lunar New Year is an important holiday of the year, a time for family reunions. If students are too caught up in studying and homework during Tet, they will not have time to experience and enjoy holiday activities.

In addition, Mr. Cuong noted that the Tet holiday is not too long. Students in Hanoi get 8 days off, while those in other provinces and cities get about 10-14 days, so students don't need to worry too much about forgetting what they've learned.

"Furthermore, schools have already planned review sessions and supplementary knowledge for students after the holiday, and teachers have a lot of experience in this area, so students and their families can rest assured and enjoy the Tet holiday," Mr. Cuong said.

Similarly, Mr. Tung emphasized that "studying is studying, playing is playing" is the key to balance for students today. He advised students to boldly put aside all their studies for the 10 days of Tet to rest, connect with family members, and help their parents.

"This is also a golden opportunity to alleviate the academic pressure the students have been under recently," Mr. Tung shared.
