During a trip to the Southwest sea with a working delegation from the Navy and Ho Chi Minh City, reporter Tieu Tan, working at Saigon Giai Phong Newspaper, always spent a little time sketching pictures right after returning to the ship from work.
Tieu Tan confided: "Since I was a child, I loved drawing. I dreamed of becoming an artist when I grew up. But after graduating from high school, I was admitted to the Faculty of Journalism and Communication, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Ho Chi Minh City National University.
After working as a journalist for 8 years, in 2021, I started taking drawing classes with teachers, who are also watercolor painters, at the Saigon Watercolor Club, Ho Chi Minh City Fine Arts Association.
The first work I drew was "The Road Home" with the space of a field in the countryside, a small road leading home and a small village in the distance. The painting is small but contains my feelings when I remember my homeland and roots.
Journalism has its daily hardships and challenges. But journalism also gives me the opportunity to travel a lot, experience and feel more about life around me. These trips help me expand my emotional space. I express them not only in my writings, but also in my paintings.
I learn to draw at night because I always prioritize my main job as a journalist. After being busy with work and life, drawing has become a peaceful place for me to rely on for refuge and healing. I have never thought of drawing to make money or to become famous. For me, drawing is a return to myself, a realization of a childhood dream.
Reporter Tieu Tan
I have a talent for painting, love the world of colors, I choose simple, familiar things in life around me to paint. When painting is also a time to practice, explore colors, the rhythm of the painting. Writing for articles or painting, to me, are both important, because it is a journey to find myself.
In 2024, I was fortunate to participate in two business trips to Truong Sa and the Southwest islands. At each island and rig, everyone had very special feelings. Returning to the mainland, I brought with me pride in the beautiful mountains, rivers, and islands of Vietnam and admiration for the steely spirit of the marine soldiers, creating a series of paintings called "Truong Sa Restlessness".
The paintings have been auctioned and the entire amount of money has been donated to Truong Sa officers and soldiers through the fund "For the homeland's sea and islands - For the frontline of the Fatherland" of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Ho Chi Minh City.
When I go on business trips, I always have paints, paper, and brushes in my luggage. However, I have very little time on the islands, I have to focus on my professional work, so I can only sketch quickly, collect materials, and record my emotions to complete the work when I return to the mainland.
For me, it is not easy for a journalist to find a passion for painting, because I am not a professional artist. However, I am still learning to paint, and learning to paint with other materials. I think that if anyone has a special love for painting, they should go to school and experience it.
Because studying is not necessarily to become an artist, but to discover yourself and create your own works. Becoming an artist is a long journey, requiring passion, effort, and especially talent from each person.
I am drawing about 20 new paintings about the sea and islands (Truong Sa, DK1 platform, Southwest sea and islands) and will continue to display and auction them to donate all the proceeds from the sale of the paintings to the fund "For the sea and islands of the homeland - For the frontline of the Fatherland", a part to support children in remote areas in early 2025.
