Over 80 billion VND spent on repairing National Highway 51.

The Ministry of Transport has allocated 58.9 billion VND in 2024 for maintenance, repair, and addressing traffic black spots on National Highway 51. In 2025, the road surface drainage system will be further upgraded with a budget of over 80 billion VND.

On December 19th, according to news from Ba Ria - Vung Tau province, the Ministry of Transport has responded to a petition from voters in the province regarding the damage and traffic safety issues on National Highway 51.

Voters in Ba Ria - Vung Tau have requested that the Ministry of Transport take prompt measures to repair, upgrade, and improve traffic safety on the road.

In response to the request, the Ministry of Transport said it had directed relevant agencies to inspect the situation and propose solutions to address the problem. The Ministry has allocated 58.9 billion VND in 2024 to carry out maintenance, repair, and address traffic black spots.

Specifically, the flood control project in Phu My will be implemented with a total budget of 15 billion VND, expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2025. In addition, road surface repair, drainage system improvements, and traffic safety enhancement projects will continue to be implemented in 2025 with a total budget of over 80 billion VND.

Regarding the establishment of ownership of assets for the BOT project to expand National Highway 51, the Ministry of Transport has coordinated with the Ministry of Finance and the investor to resolve obstacles and complete legal documents, aiming to establish public ownership of the project's assets.

Regarding National Highway 51, according to Road Management Area 4, this 73.6km long road, passing through Dong Nai and Ba Ria - Vung Tau provinces, is severely degraded. Currently, the traffic volume on this route reaches 60,500 vehicles per day and night (5-6 times higher than the original design). The BOT project for National Highway 51 also stopped collecting tolls in January 2023, so the investor has stopped maintenance to ensure traffic safety.

Maintenance and repair work on National Highway 51 is carried out regularly.

Road Management Area 4 has carried out procedures and submitted requests to competent authorities for funding to repair urgently damaged sections of the road. However, in reality, this route, having been in operation for a long time (10-12 years) and with an increasing volume of traffic, especially heavy trucks, frequently suffers damage to the road surface and drainage system.

Therefore, to ensure traffic safety, additional funds need to be allocated to continue repairing damaged sections of National Highway 51. Furthermore, the project also needs to expedite the process of establishing public ownership of the road to facilitate management, and a long-term plan for overhauling and upgrading the entire route is necessary.
