Honda Vietnam (HVN) has officially marked an important milestone in its electrification journey with the launch of its first domestically produced electric motorbike model, the ICON e:.

Honda ICON e electric motorbike: is the first pure electric product that the Japanese Honda brand has launched to Vietnamese customers, marking an important milestone after about 30 years of dominating the gasoline motorbike market with a market share of about 70-80%.

Before going into production, Honda introduced the ICON e: and CUV e: at the Vietnam Motor Show 2024 in October in Ho Chi Minh City. While the Honda ICON e: is assembled in Vietnam , the CUV e: model will be imported from Thailand.

In terms of appearance, Honda ICON e: has overall dimensions of 1,796 x 680 x 1,085 mm, seat height of 742 mm, weight of 89 kg, slightly smaller than the Honda Vision scooter model. The vehicle design is compact, fashionable , suitable for student customers.

The vehicle is equipped with a full LED lighting system, headlights with integrated LED positioning strips. LCD display screen, spacious 26-liter trunk. Under the handlebars are two small storage compartments with a USB charging port. ICON e: uses a single disc brake in the front, a drum brake in the rear and a motor located on the rear wheel.

According to the announcement from Honda Vietnam , the ICON e electric motorbike model can travel up to 50 km per charge. The vehicle uses a 30.6 Ah lithium-ion battery, meets IP67 waterproof standards and weighs about 1.3 kg.

Honda ICON e battery: can be charged directly on the vehicle or removed for charging with a household power source, takes 7.5 hours to fully charge. In case of fast charging from 30-70%, charging time is 3.5 hours.

ICON e: is equipped with a 1.5 kW electric motor, 85 Nm torque, maximum speed of 49 km/h. According to current regulations, electric motorbikes with a capacity of no more than 4 kW and a speed of less than 50 km/h do not require a driver's license, which helps ICON e: reach younger customers more easily.

Honda plans to distribute the ICON e: from early April 2025, at which time the price of the Honda ICON e 2025 and its business policy will be announced in more detail. At the VMS 2024 exhibition, the company revealed that the expected price of the ICON e: is under 30 million VND (excluding the battery). Meanwhile, the CUV e: has not been opened for sale but only applies a limited rental form in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

With an expected price of under VND30 million, this model is considered a product with the potential to attract market attention. This is also the first step for Honda to gradually electrify the brand's two-wheeled and four-wheeled product portfolio, in the context of Vietnam moving towards the Net Zero goal by 2050.

Currently, the Vietnamese electric motorbike market is mainly led by VinFast with many models spanning many segments. In addition, there is also the presence of Yamaha Neo's, Yadea, Pega, Dat Bike, Selex and a number of other imported electric motorbike brands.
