HP has just announced a new large ultra-wide monitor designed for work and office needs. The HP Series 5 Pro 49-inch conference monitor uses a 32:9 VA panel with a resolution of 5120 x 1440, a refresh rate of 165Hz and an 1800R curvature.

Like other monitors of the same size and resolution, it's equivalent to using two 27-inch monitors side by side.

Unlike the Samsung, Dell, Lenovo, and LG offerings, however, the Series 5 Pro has a hidden 5-megapixel webcam that supports Windows Hello and pops up from the top when you tap to unlock.

HP demonstrated software that would allow it to act as two or three virtual displays for use as multiple monitors at once.

The screen looks quite bright and contrasts well in an office environment, the back has HDMI 2.1, DisplayPort 1.4, Ethernet and a couple of USB ports (with KVM functionality).

While the display has a refresh rate of up to 165Hz and covers 99% of the sRGB color space, the 5ms response time and 8-bit color depth make it not ideal for gaming or creating content that requires high color sensitivity.

It's a compact product if you have enough desk space, and despite being a bulky piece of hardware, it still has height adjustment up to 150mm (a little less than 15cm) or a standard 100mm VESA mount.

The 49-inch ultrawide monitor format isn't new, but it's growing in popularity as a single, central display, and this one relies on the fact that its 5120x1440 resolution is essentially two 1440p screens stitched together.

HP's built-in technology lets you use the display as two or more virtual screens—ideal for sharing over video conferencing, where a 32:9 image isn't easy to parse—or some other combination.
