Organic farming for export coffee

Spanning an average altitude of 1,000 meters above sea level, the vast coffee plantations in the central region of Lam Dong province continue to transition to organic farming practices to meet export quality standards for markets in India, the US, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.

Improve farming techniques.

Following the first rains of May 2026, farmer Nguyen Anh Duc in Tan Trung village, Tan Ha commune, Lam Ha district, implemented techniques to prune fruit-bearing branches from the previous season, trim new foliage, create open space above, and apply organic fertilizer to provide nutrients to each tree base. He also irrigated with clean water pumped from a well, aiming to ensure growth and increase the weight and quality of coffee beans harvested in the next season.

In total, Mr. Duc's family and his son's family are currently practicing organic farming on over 1.5 hectares of coffee plantations, nearly 15 years old, in Tan Trung village, Tan Ha commune, Lam Ha district. On these plantations, they also cultivate and intercrop hundreds of multi-purpose trees that provide shade and yield cash crops such as macadamia nuts, pepper, and various fruit trees.

“Currently, my family's coffee plantations have been certified as organic according to Vietnamese standards for over four years. Every year, the certification body visits each garden to inspect and conclude that the organic indicators are met throughout the entire cultivation and harvesting process. And for the past year, our farming households have been admitted as members of the Bac Tan Ha Group Cooperative, through which the organic process continues to be upgraded and supplemented, achieving higher yields and product quality to meet export requirements…,” Mr. Nguyen Anh Duc said excitedly.

Accordingly, with the organic farming process, Mr. Duc and his son's coffee garden has completely taken control of its supply of microbial fertilizers processed from animal manure and crop by-products, clean water pumped from a well and on-site sedimentation and filtration tank; and uses biological pesticides to control pests and diseases. As a result, in the 2025-2026 crop year, the organic coffee gardens will harvest nearly 1 ton more coffee beans per hectare compared to the inorganic coffee gardens in the 2024-2025 crop year.

Mr. Nguyen Dinh Quy, Director of Bac Tan Ha Group Cooperative, said that farmer Nguyen Anh Duc is one of 200 farming households linked to cultivate 350 hectares of organic coffee in the communes of Tan Ha, Phuc Tho, Phu Son, and Dinh Van, Lam Ha, located in the aforementioned climate zone at an altitude of around 1,000 meters above sea level. The cooperative contracts with each member household to guide and transfer new organic farming techniques, invest in and advance microbial fertilizers as needed, and guarantee the purchase of all harvested products at a price approximately 10% higher than the market price.

Linking with Indian partners for export

Significantly, in the last three months, the cooperative has processed and used over 10,000 liters of organic fertilizer for root irrigation and spraying from the trunk and branches to the foliage. As a result, the coffee plants have developed strong root systems, increased fruit size daily, and are estimated to reduce input costs by up to 30% compared to inorganic farming…

“To date, our cooperative has about 100 hectares of coffee that have completed or are in the process of completing the organic certification process. The remaining 250 hectares of coffee are being cultivated organically, gradually reducing the use of inorganic substances in stages from 35% to 65% and then 100%,” Director Nguyen Dinh Quy added.

Over the past year, Bac Tan Ha Group Cooperative has partnered with Binh Loc Cooperative in Ward 2, Bao Loc City, to implement technology for washing away residual inorganic substances in the soil of member farmers' coffee plantations. It is expected that within one, two, and three years, the 250 hectares of coffee produced under this integrated production model in the communes of Tan Ha, Lam Ha, Phuc Tho, Phu Son, and Dinh Van will successively meet organic export standards for the global market.

In particular, the horizontal linkage between the two cooperatives has also connected with Planttrich Group of India, which directly surveys and guides member farmers in improving organic farming techniques in each coffee plantation for export. Specifically, when farmers harvest coffee, the two cooperatives collect large quantities of produce to supply Planttrich Group of India before distributing it to a market network in 25 countries worldwide .

Mr. Bijumonkurien, representing the Board of Directors of Planttrich Group India, pledged: “Our group is always ready to provide technical support to member farmers in the Binh Loc Cooperative and Bac Tan Ha Group's supply chain to protect and enhance the fertility of coffee soil, ensuring that harvested products meet organic standards through the strict control process of importing countries. This will ‘synergize’ optimal income for producers…”
