IBM announced on May 28th that it will invest more than $10 billion in quantum computing over the next five years, aiming to build the first large-scale quantum computer capable of reliably and error-free performing complex calculations by 2029.

Quantum computing is a technology that uses the principles of quantum mechanics to process information, and is expected to solve some problems beyond the capabilities of traditional computers. According to IBM, the new investment will include research and development, capital spending, ecosystem collaboration, production expansion, as well as mergers and acquisitions.

IBM's announcement comes after the Trump administration last week decided to acquire $2 billion worth of shares in nine quantum computing companies. IBM plans to receive half of this capital for a new joint venture called Anderon, which is touted as the first dedicated quantum chip manufacturing facility in the United States.

This move is part of the U.S. government's efforts to solidify its leading position in emerging technologies and compete with China. Recent breakthroughs in quantum computing have attracted investor interest, as the technology has the potential to boost fields such as drug development, financial modeling, and cryptography.

However, this field still faces many major technical hurdles, including a high error rate, which limits its practical application. Last year, Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai stated that quantum computers that are "practically useful" are still 5 to 10 years away.

IBM announced it will contribute $1 billion to Anderon. The joint venture will provide IBM's chip manufacturing technology to external customers and has begun negotiations with potential clients. IBM also committed to transferring intellectual property, assets, and personnel to Anderon, while also attracting further investors as the new company develops.

IBM shares rose 1.7% in pre-market trading. The company said it has deployed more than 90 quantum systems, more than the combined total of its industry competitors. According to filings with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, more than 325 Fortune 500 companies, startups, universities, and government agencies are using IBM's quantum systems to address challenges in chemistry, biology, and materials science .
