On December 5th, Indonesian Navy Chief of Staff, Admiral Muhammad Ali, stated that the force had provided some input, including technical specifications, for the submarine purchase contract.
Speaking at a press conference in Jakarta, Ali emphasized that European submarines are of fairly good quality and the Indonesian Ministry of Defense hopes to sign a contract next year.
The Indonesian Navy currently possesses four submarines, including KRI Cakra-401, KRI Nagapasa-403, KRI Ardadedali-404, and KRI Alugoro-405, while the minimum requirement is at least 12 by the end of 2024.
Indonesia is negotiating to purchase submarines from European companies, including Scorpène-class submarines from France's Naval Group, and Type 212 and Type 214 submarines from Germany's ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS).
The CEO of Naval Group, Pierre-Eric Pommellet, flew to Indonesia on November 9th to meet with Deputy Defense Minister M. Herindra and discuss cooperation on submarine procurement.
