On December 20, speaking to the press, Indonesian Tourism Minister Widiyanti Putri said that the country aims to attract 14.6-16 million foreign tourists by 2025, a slight increase from the 14.3 million target for 2024.

For domestic tourism, the Ministry has set a target of 1.08 billion visitors in 2025, lower than the targets set for 2023 and 2024, which were between 1.2 and 1.4 billion visitors.

The ministry also aims to achieve a 4.6% contribution of the tourism sector to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by 2025, with projected foreign exchange earnings ranging from US$19-22.1 billion.

The employment target for the tourism sector has been set at 25.8 million people.

Ms. Widiyanti said that the number of foreign tourists expected in December 2024 is estimated to be between 1 and 1.325 million, with projected revenue ranging from 22.5 trillion Rupiah (US$1.4 billion) to 29.2 trillion Rupiah (US$1.85 billion).

Based on data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), Indonesia recorded 11.6 million foreign tourists in October 2024 and has a good chance of achieving its target in the remaining months of the year.

Meanwhile, Budijanto Ardiansjah, Secretary-General of the Indonesian Association of Travel Agents and Tourism Companies (ASITA), said that he had previously suggested to the Ministry of Tourism that it should prioritize attracting foreign tourists to achieve tourism goals.

He emphasized: "It is necessary to review the Short-Stay Visa-Free policy to facilitate entry for tourists from key source markets such as China and Australia."

For long-term programs, the Ministry of Tourism needs to focus on targeted marketing and advertising campaigns. In addition, the Ministry of Tourism must conduct thorough market research to identify and prioritize high-demand markets, ensuring that advertising efforts are effectively targeted and yield optimal results.

Furthermore, the Ministry of Tourism needs to improve human resources in the tourism sector and address the issue of airfare costs to maintain Indonesia's attractiveness as a tourist destination.
