On December 20, speaking to the press, Indonesian Tourism Minister Widiyanti Putri said that the country aims to attract 14.6-16 million foreign tourists by 2025, a slight increase compared to the target of 14.3 million visitors in 2024.
For domestic tourism, the Ministry has set a target of 1.08 billion visitors in 2025, lower than the target of 1.2-1.4 billion visitors in 2023 and 2024.
The ministry also aims to achieve a 4.6 percent tourism contribution to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by 2025, with foreign exchange earnings expected to range from US$19-22.1 billion.
The employment target in the tourism sector is set at 25.8 million people.
Ms. Widiyanti said that the expected number of foreign tourists in December 2024 is estimated at 1-1.325 million, with expected revenue ranging from Rp 22.5 trillion (US$1.4 billion) to Rp 29.2 trillion (US$1.85 billion).
Based on data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), Indonesia recorded 11.6 million foreign tourist arrivals in October 2024 and has a good chance of achieving the target in the final months of the year.
Meanwhile, Secretary General of the Association of Indonesian Tour and Travel Agents (ASITA) Budijanto Ardiansjah said that he had previously suggested that the Tourism Ministry should prioritize attracting foreign tourists to achieve tourism goals.
“It is necessary to review the Short-term Visa-Free Stay (SVW) policy to facilitate entry for tourists from key source markets such as China and Australia,” he stressed.
For long-term programs, the Ministry of Tourism needs to focus on targeted marketing and advertising campaigns. In addition, the Ministry of Tourism must also conduct thorough market research to identify and prioritize high-demand markets, ensuring that promotional efforts are effectively targeted and deliver optimal results.
In addition, the Ministry of Tourism needs to improve human resources in the tourism sector and address the issue of airfare costs to maintain Indonesia's attractiveness as a tourist destination.
