A new research document reveals that Apple has ambitions to turn the iPhone into a perfect photography device, even when submerged underwater.

According to AppleInsider , a recently granted Apple patent reveals a feature that allows users to film underwater with their iPhones without the need for third-party accessories.

"When shooting underwater, conventional camera systems must be protected and isolated from the water environment," Apple explains in the patent. Additionally, Apple notes that in certain situations, "a specialized lens protection layer may be fitted, for example, a hemispherical lens accessory on the camera."

However, AppleInsider also points out that placing these protective layers in front of the lens is a trade-off. While it may correct image distortion caused by water, the waterproof accessory itself sometimes creates similar image distortions.

Furthermore, waterproof accessories are often quite large and bulky. Meanwhile, what Apple is really aiming for is a much thinner, more streamlined protection system, optimized to the point where it can be integrated directly into an iPhone case.

Apple's proposed solution is that the iPhone will still use a multi-camera setup, but without needing separate waterproof accessories for each lens. Instead, the device could use a single protective layer, which would also act as a lens within the overall lens structure of the different camera modules.

"If the lenses and camera modules are arranged along a flat surface, then essentially this single optical layer can also be flattened," the iPhone manufacturer's patent explains.

This patent recognizes the contributions of two inventors, Ryan M. Sheridan and Benjamin D. Buckner. Notably, Benjamin D. Buckner previously collaborated with Apple on a research project aimed at correcting the "fisheye" distortion caused by certain types of lenses.
