On May 31, WANA news agency, citing sources from the Iranian government, asserted that speculation about Pezeshkian's departure was part of a "smoke screen" campaign targeting Tehran.
"Information about President Pezeshkian's resignation is completely inaccurate. The Iranian president is still fully fulfilling his duties, and his upcoming work schedule will proceed as planned without any changes. Such rumors usually aim at two purposes: firstly, to create an atmosphere of instability, and secondly, to sow division in society and weaken Iran's internal unity," a WANA source said.

Mehdi Tabatabaei, Deputy Head of Communications at the Iranian President's Office, later denied the information, emphasizing that Pezeshkian "will not abandon his duty to serve the people."
The statement from Tehran officials came after the Iranian newspaper Iran International published information claiming that President Pezeshkian had sent a letter of resignation to Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei.
"The letter underscores that the president and government have been excluded from the country's decision-making process, while IRGC officials control everything. Under such circumstances, Pezeshkian felt he could not fulfill his official duties and therefore offered to resign," Iran International reported.
