The U.S. military said it conducted what it described as "self-defense" airstrikes targeting Iranian radar and drone control facilities over the weekend. Meanwhile, Iran claimed to have targeted an air base linked to the U.S. attack. Both sides continued to exchange attacks amid ongoing talks aimed at ending hostilities.

The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) posted on social media on June 1 that the airstrikes in Goruk and Qeshm Island were in response to "aggression" from Iran.

According to CENTCOM, Iran shot down a US MQ-1 drone operating in international waters. In response, US fighter jets destroyed an Iranian air defense system, a ground control station, and two one-way attack drones that the US military considered a threat to maritime operations in the region.

The U.S. military confirmed that no soldiers were injured in the operation.

Meanwhile, on June 2, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced that its aerospace forces had attacked the source of the US airstrike targeting a telecommunications tower on Sirik Island in Hormozgan province. However, Iran did not specify the location of the targeted base.

In a statement published by Iranian state media, the IRGC warned that if the US attacks continue, Tehran's response will be "completely different" and Washington will be held responsible for the consequences.

On the same day, the Kuwaiti military said its air defenses were responding to threats from missiles and UAVs. Kuwaiti authorities said the explosions heard were the result of intercepting airborne targets, but did not disclose the source of the attack or the targeted objectives.

Kuwait, which currently houses a US air base, has repeatedly been targeted by Iran and its allied forces in the region.

The US and Iran have exchanged numerous attacks since reaching a ceasefire in early April. Last week, Iran also launched an attack on a US air base.

Meanwhile, negotiations for a comprehensive agreement remain hampered by disagreements over Iran's nuclear and missile programs.

In a social media post on June 2nd, US President Donald Trump urged critics of the delays in the negotiation process to "calm down and relax," while asserting that Iran genuinely wants to reach an agreement and that it would be a deal beneficial to the US and its allies.

The war, launched by the US and Israel on February 28, has killed thousands of people, mostly in Iran and Lebanon, along with 13 US soldiers. The conflict has also caused a sharp rise in global energy prices after Iran retaliated by restricting shipping through the Strait of Hormuz – a shipping lane that previously handled about 20% of the world's oil supply before the war.

On May 30, Trump declared that Iran must commit to never possessing nuclear weapons, and demanded that the Strait of Hormuz be reopened to unrestricted shipping in both directions and that all mines along the waterway be removed.

For its part, Iran accuses Washington of prolonging the negotiation process with demands that Tehran considers excessive.

Furthermore, the US-Iran dialogue process is also being affected by the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah forces in Lebanon. Despite the ceasefire, the Israeli military continues its operations against these Iranian-backed forces.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on June 1st that his country wants to expand its direct control in Lebanon after Israeli troops captured Beaufort Ridge – a strategically important medieval fortress – marking the deepest advance into Lebanese territory in over 25 years.

US officials said Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke by phone with Prime Minister Netanyahu and Lebanese President Joseph Aoun as part of ongoing diplomatic efforts. Washington also proposed a plan to facilitate de-escalation and ultimately end hostilities.
