The death toll from the stampede at El Salvador's stadium is rising. According to initial reports from AP, two people are in critical condition and dozens were injured when fans crowded the stands.

Hours later, sources reported nine fatalities. The latest figure, provided by Reuters, is 12 deaths.

The incident occurred on the evening of May 20th at the Cuscatlan Stadium in San Salvador, El Salvador – a stadium with a capacity of over 44,000 people. The match between Alianza and Deportivo FAS in the quarter-finals of the El Salvador national cup was the main attraction for fans.

"The El Salvador Football Federation expresses its deepest condolences regarding the events that occurred at the Cuscatlan stadium. We offer our condolences to the families of all the victims of this incident," the El Salvador Football Federation stated in a press release. The organization affirmed that it is preparing a report and will cooperate with relevant authorities to resolve the matter.
