Joao Felix the most wasteful in history?

The total transfer fee that clubs had to pay to recruit Joao Felix over the past half decade reached 233 million euros.

Felix joined Chelsea on loan from Atletico Madrid, before being bought permanently in the summer of 2025 for a fee of 52 million euros.

With Al Nassr completing a deal worth around €50 million to sign Felix from Chelsea, the Portuguese striker becomes the fourth highest total transfer fee in world football history.

Felix (233 million euros), only behind Neymar Jr (total transfer fee of about 405 million euros) and Kylian Mbappe (327 million euros). He surpassed Philippe Coutinho, another big waste on the transfer market (215 million euros).

According to Marca , if Neymar and Mbappe have more or less shown their value at their respective clubs, Felix and Coutinho are a huge waste. Felix's total transfer fee of around 233 million euros includes 126 million euros spent by Atletico Madrid to bring him from Benfica, and 52 million euros spent by Chelsea to buy the player from Atletico. Last season, AC Milan also spent 5 million euros to borrow Felix.

With Al Nassr spending €50m to buy the player from Chelsea, Felix will have almost his last chance in Saudi Arabia to prove his ability. Meanwhile, Coutinho moved from Liverpool to Barcelona in 2018 for €145m, then went on loan to Bayern Munich (€8.5m) and Aston Villa (a deal worth around €20m + add-ons).

In total, Coutinho's transfers from his time at Vasco da Gama and Inter Milan cost the clubs more than 215 million euros.
