Diverse seafood
One day in mid-April, a passenger ferry departing from Phan Thiet high-speed ferry terminal took us to Phu Quy Island, the "pearl island," after a 2.5-hour journey. The waves were gentle and the sea calm, so the trip to the island was not difficult or tiring for us, unlike during the windy season.
The port of Phu Quy is vast yet bustling and crowded. Hundreds of tourists and locals line up to board and disembark in a constant stream. The transportation of goods is equally vibrant. Countless essential items, from household goods and food to fruit, are transported from the mainland to the island. Conversely, from the shore, carefully packaged shipments of frozen seafood from the island are purchased by tourists and locals to take back to the mainland.

It's no coincidence that Phu Quy's seafood is so well-known and sought after by visitors to the island. As Ms. Nguyen Hai My, a tourist from Da Lat visiting the island for the first time, shared: "My family has had the opportunity to enjoy authentic Phu Quy special zone seafood many times, thanks to gifts from relatives and friends."
For tourists, even first-time visitors to the island, buying local specialties is not difficult. Through introductions from locals, we easily choose pre-processed and pre-cooked products, all vacuum-packed. Ms. Do Thi Ngoc Mai, owner of a seafood stall on Vo Van Kiet Street, Trieu Duong village, Phu Quy Special Economic Zone, said: "Through referrals from acquaintances, we connect and introduce products to customers via Zalo or arrange direct visits to the seafood market." According to Ms. Mai, at this time, thanks to the large number of visitors to the island, sales are higher than usual. Seafood is pre-processed, cleaned, and vacuum-packed in small packages for easy storage.
Because of the freshness of the seafood here, even though prices are higher at this time of year, I still buy some types like grouper, squid, and mackerel to take back to the mainland to eat gradually.

High demand despite price increase.
The owner of this seafood wholesaler added that recently, due to the impact of rising raw material prices, the selling prices of most types of seafood on the island have increased by about 30% compared to before. For example, sun-dried mackerel costs 350,000 VND/kg, fresh mackerel costs 230,000 VND/kg, squid costs 330,000 VND/kg, red grouper costs 430,000 VND/kg, and leatherjacket fish costs 160,000 VND/kg. Dried squid, in particular, is not yet in season, so its price has increased significantly, with the medium-sized variety costing 600,000 VND/kg…

Besides processed seafood, many tourists prefer high-end, fresh seafood from the island. Responding to this demand, many businesses, such as Mr. Nguyen Truong Thanh in Phu Long village, Phu Quy Special Economic Zone, cater to this need. According to Mr. Thanh, after fishermen's boats return, mainly from fishing near the island, he buys the fresh seafood and keeps it in cement tanks. Customers come to his place to choose and buy on the spot. As of mid-April 2026, the prices of fresh seafood here were as follows: king crab 1.2 million VND/kg, moon crab 500,000 VND/kg, green lobster 1.2 million VND/kg, queen conch 500,000 VND/kg…

According to the People's Committee of Phu Quy Special Economic Zone, from the beginning of 2026 to the present, thanks to favorable weather conditions for fishing vessels participating in offshore fishing, the production has increased compared to the same period, reaching 3,570 tons. This includes 2,158 tons of various types of fresh fish, 934 tons of fresh squid, and 478 tons of other products, an increase of 729 tons compared to the same period last year. Currently, the locality is strengthening inspections and controls of accommodation establishments and service businesses. This ensures the proper implementation of price listing and selling at listed prices, as well as food safety and hygiene.
With its advantageous coastal location, Phu Quy Special Economic Zone possesses significant development potential, including seafood exploitation. Consequently, the seafood market in Phu Quy becomes increasingly vibrant and attractive during the peak summer tourist season.
According to the People's Committee of Phu Quy Special Economic Zone, the total number of tourists visiting Phu Quy Island by the end of the first quarter of 2026 is estimated at 57,286, an increase of 1,382 compared to the same period last year.
