- On the morning of February 24th (the 27th day of the first lunar month of the Year of the Snake), the Organizing Committee of the festival in Hoang Van Thu ward, Lang Son city, held the Ky Lua Firecracker Festival 2025. This is a unique highlight of the Ky Cung Temple - Ta Phu Temple Festival (a national intangible cultural heritage).
Excerpt from the story of Duke Than Cong Tai of Han.
Attending the meeting were: Mr. Duong Xuan Huyen, Member of the Standing Committee of the Provincial Party Committee, Permanent Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee; Mr. Dinh Huu Hoc, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Council; representatives of the leadership of several provincial departments, agencies, and districts; leaders of the Lang Son City Party Committee, People's Council, People's Committee, and Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee; a delegation from Chongzuo City and Pingxiang Township, Guangxi, China; representatives from several neighboring provinces, along with a large number of local people and tourists from all over.
During the program, delegates, local residents, and visitors from near and far enjoyed many outstanding cultural performances, most notably a reenactment of the story of Han Quan Cong Than Cong Tai (worshipped at Ta Phu Temple - Ky Lua). He was a military officer under the Le Dynasty and Trinh Lords, who made significant contributions to expanding trade and commerce in Lang Son between Vietnam and China in the late 17th century. He also expanded seven roads and seven wards, establishing the Ky Lua market town, contributing to improving the lives of the people of Lang Son.
According to local legend, during the reign of Duke Than Cong Tai of Han, there was a year when bandits rose up and harassed the people. He mobilized the garrison forces to cooperate with the people in defeating the bandits. After that victory, he held a celebration every year at the beginning of spring. Since then, the firecracker festival has been organized and has become increasingly well-known to tourists from near and far.
A large number of locals and tourists participated in the firecracker contest.
The Ky Lua Firecracker Festival takes place on the 27th day of the first lunar month every year. The most spectacular part is the firecracker head contest. According to folk belief, whoever is lucky enough to win the firecracker head and bring it home for worship will always be healthy, have a happy family, enjoy prosperity, and experience good fortune throughout the year. Due to favorable weather, this year's firecracker head contest attracted a large number of people from the province and tourists from near and far.

At this year's festival, Mr. Dinh Van Nhien, 50 years old, from Thanh Mien district, Hai Duong province, won the firecracker head. According to the organizers' rules, Mr. Nhien was awarded 2 million dong, a plate of sticky rice with chicken, and a plate of five kinds of fruit. Because he lives far away, the firecracker head will be left at the temple for worship, and on the 20th day of the first lunar month of the following year, the winner must return the firecracker head and offer a thanksgiving ceremony.
After the Ky Lua Firecracker Festival concluded, at 12 noon on February 24th (the 27th day of the first lunar month of the Year of the Snake), the Organizing Committee performed the ritual of carrying the palanquin of Lord Tuan Tranh from Ta Phu Temple - Ky Lua, Hoang Van Thu Ward to Ky Cung Temple, Vinh Trai Ward.
