Opening Ceremony of the Kien Giang Provincial Trade Union Congress in the Mekong Delta Region

The Congress was attended by 238 delegates representing over 71,000 trade union members. This Congress was chosen by the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor as a model to draw lessons for directing the Trade Union Congresses of provinces in the Mekong Delta region.

Attending and directing the Congress were Comrade Nguyen Dinh Khang – Member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam, President of the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor (VGCL); Comrade Do Thanh Binh – Member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam, Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee; representatives of the leadership of 11 provincial VGCLs in the Mekong Delta region; and 238 official delegates representing more than 79,000 trade union members.

In her opening remarks at the congress, Comrade Truong Thanh Thuy - Member of the Executive Committee of the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor, Provincial Party Committee Member and President of the Provincial Confederation of Labor - stated that, despite the province's difficult conditions during the past term, with a tradition of solidarity and determination, union members, workers, and employees of Kien Giang province have achieved significant results in the workers' and employees' movement and trade union activities, completing and exceeding most of the targets set in the Resolution.

Kien Giang province has over 11,400 operating businesses with registered capital exceeding 197,600 billion VND. The workforce employed in agencies, units, and businesses with trade union organizations numbers nearly 80,000 people, an increase of nearly 12,000 compared to the beginning of the term. During the past term, trade unions at all levels in the province have demonstrated a strong sense of responsibility, focusing strongly on the grassroots level, implementing many breakthrough solutions, and innovating the content and methods of their activities. They have achieved and surpassed all 9 key targets set forth in the Resolution of the 10th Congress of the Kien Giang Provincial Trade Union. Among these, over 30,000 new members were recruited, exceeding the target by more than 214%, the highest achievement.

Delivering a keynote address at the congress, Comrade Nguyen Dinh Khang, Member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam and President of the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor, acknowledged, commended, and congratulated the achievements of the trade unions at all levels in Kien Giang province during the past term, making important contributions to the development of the Vietnamese trade union organization and contributing to the building of Kien Giang province.

The Chairman of the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor emphasized: “For Kien Giang province, the future development orientation of industrial zones, clusters, and high-quality tourist areas is expected to mobilize and attract a large workforce. The quality of the workforce will continue to improve, diversifying in structure according to industries and economic sectors. This is both a favorable condition for trade unions to expand their scope of attracting and gathering union members and workers; at the same time, it is a pressure requiring all levels of trade unions in Kien Giang province to resolutely innovate the content and methods of trade union activities in a way that is innovative, practical, effective, and suitable for each target group, locality, and field.”

At the congress, Comrade Do Thanh Binh – Member of the Central Committee of the Party, Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee, and Head of the National Assembly Delegation of Kien Giang province – also noted that trade unions at all levels, in coordination with political and social organizations, have done a good job of disseminating the Party's guidelines and policies, the State's laws and regulations, and other issues related to trade unions. This has helped union members and workers to have a fuller understanding, trust in the leadership of the Party and the State, actively work and produce, self-study, and apply science and technology to production to increase productivity, income, and secure stable employment.

The Secretary of the Kien Giang Provincial Party Committee directed: “The current situation requires all levels of trade unions to have a clearer understanding of the functions and tasks of their organization; first and foremost, the new, increasingly large and urgent demands on the role of caring for, representing, and protecting the legitimate rights and interests of workers. The main and top priority now is issues that are practically related to the lives of workers, and the effectiveness of caring for and protecting union members.”

Therefore, in the coming term, I propose that all levels of trade unions must identify this as a fundamental operational goal, a basic function, and a core, overarching task; it is a crucial factor in uniting and connecting union members with the trade union organization and building a strong trade union. The trade union organization must truly be a reliable support for its members and workers.”

The Kien Giang Provincial Federation of Labor has set two breakthroughs for the 2023-2028 term. Firstly, focusing on representing and protecting the legitimate rights and interests of union members and workers; with a focus on dialogue, negotiation, and signing collective labor agreements in units and enterprises. Secondly, innovating the working methods of all levels of trade unions in the province, with a focus on implementing digital transformation in trade union activities.
