Unearthed in a mastaba—a large, rectangular, flat-topped Egyptian tomb—near the town of Tarkhan, about 60 km south of Cairo in 1913, the Tarkhan dress dates back approximately 5,000 years. This makes it the oldest known garment in the world . Photo: Getty Images. After thousands of years, the Tarkhan dress remains relatively intact. However, after its discovery, the garment was overlooked and mixed in with rags. Photo: arkeonews.
In 1977, the true value of the Tarkhan dress was discovered when it was accidentally included in a package of textiles sent to the Victoria Albert Museum in London, England, for preservation. It was created by the Egyptians between approximately 3482 BC and 3102 BC. Photo: historicaleve.

The Tarkhan dress has a V-neck and is made from three pieces of hand-woven linen fabric from the flax plant (Linum usitatissimum). The sleeves and bodice feature knife-like pleats made from sharp, narrow folds in the fabric. The lower part of the garment is missing. Photo: UCL Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archaeology. However, based on the style and size, experts speculate that this dress was made for a young woman with a slender figure. Photo: Dr Anna Garnett/Facebook. In a 2016 study, experts at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands confirmed that the Tarkhan dress was made "during the early period of the First Dynasty." Photo: Dr. Anna Garnett/Facebook.
Researchers suggest that the Tarkhan dress was most likely made for a wealthy, distinguished woman of ancient Egypt. This type of garment was later used to dress women after their death. Photo: reddit. Readers are invited to watch the video : Egypt opens its ancient city to tourists. Source: THĐT1.
