The An Thoi tunnels are a unique structure, formed during the resistance war against the US, marking the unwavering determination of the army and people of Tay Ninh to hold their ground during the fierce years of war.

Hidden underground in An Tinh ward, the tunnels are not only a historical relic but also a symbol of the spirit of unity and creativity in combat.

According to historical documents, during the period 1961-1965, in the face of continuous enemy sweeps, the Trang Bang District Party Committee directed the construction of a complex system of underground tunnels in An Thoi hamlet to serve the strategy of holding onto the land and protecting the villages.

During the period of 1966-1968, the project continued to expand and be completed into a comprehensive combat system, connecting with secret tunnels, trenches, and surface battlefields.

The tunnels were designed in a zigzag pattern, approximately 3 meters deep, 0.8-1 meter wide, and 1.2-1.4 meters high. The numerous bends in the structure helped to minimize the destructive force of bombs and bullets. From within the tunnels, strategically placed loopholes provided optimal conditions for the forces inside to observe and fight effectively.

Mr. Pham Van Tho (56 years old, the caretaker of the historical site) said that previously, the tunnel system was many kilometers long, but now about 750 meters of the central area have been preserved to serve tourists who want to learn about history.

Within the historical site, the monument area commemorates the heroic martyrs who sacrificed their lives for national independence. The battles fought here contributed to the victory of the 1975 campaign to liberate the South, leading the country to the day of complete victory on April 30, 1975.

In addition, the exhibition area, with its honeycomb-patterned stone walkways and artifacts such as M79 and M16 rifles – trophies captured in combat – contributes to a vivid recreation of a historical period.

In 1993, the An Thoi Tunnels were recognized as a national historical and cultural relic, with a total protected area of over 3 hectares.

Along with the Cu Chi Tunnels, the An Thoi Tunnels are a vivid testament to the indomitable fighting spirit of the Vietnamese people in the resistance war against the US to save the country.
