The Taboo bamboo space in Thanh Tam village (Cam Thanh commune, Hoi An city, Quang Nam province) is where 46-year-old Vo Tan Tan creates his "giant" models of insects, aquatic animals, and more.
Driven by a burning passion for bamboo, Tan started by making bicycle frames, and in 2018 he decided to try his hand at creating giant animal models with extremely high levels of detail and precision.
Visiting Mr. Tan's production facility, many people will have the opportunity to see familiar animals firsthand, such as fireflies magnified 1,000 times or flying fish that are realistic down to the smallest detail.
The giant crab was crafted from bamboo by Mr. Vo Tan Tan and his team of artisans.
"To evoke emotion in the viewer, the proportions must be precise. The most important thing is to preserve the natural color of the bamboo, so that when people look at it, they can recognize it as bamboo…," Mr. Tan said.
Initially, when creating large models, he encountered many difficulties in stages such as finding the correct proportions, selecting suitable bamboo materials, and determining the method of connecting the parts…
With perseverance, he researched and succeeded in finding the secret to making the models look lifelike. Over the past 6 years, he has created many "giant" models, such as a crab 2.25m tall, a shrimp 4m long, a praying mantis 2.5m tall...
Knowing of his skillful craftsmanship in creating animals from bamboo, a museum in France specializing in arts and crafts commissioned him to create a large animal for display. Currently, Mr. Tan is working on a 4-meter-long, 2-meter-high phoenix with outstretched wings.
The giant bamboo praying mantis is an enlarged version of the original.
According to Mr. Tan, the completion time for each model varies depending on the customer's requirements and the level of difficulty, averaging 2-3 months. Each model costs around 100 million VND.
