The set of 8 stamps, with denominations of 80p, £1.20, £1.35, £1.90, £2.30, £3.00, £3.90 and £4.85, are 48.2mm x 28mm in size and were designed by Jersey Post's artists based on 8 stunning photographs taken by local astrophotographers Neil Mahrer and Gordon Pollock. In addition to the stamp set, Jersey Post also issues collector's items such as first day of issue envelopes (FDCs), souvenir stamp covers, and cancellation requests (CTOs). The stamps and other items are printed using 4-color offset printing technology at the Belgian Post's stamp printing company (bPost).
Three of the eight stamps feature iconic Jersey landmarks including Grosnez Castle, the Puffin and Archirondel Tower. The other five are stunning space photographs, focusing on a particular astronomical phenomenon, such as a lunar eclipse.
To capture these amazing natural phenomena, photographers used a number of specialized techniques to capture the stunning nighttime views visible from the island nation. While the images are usually in true color, one image used a technique called “Narrowband Imaging,” in which special filters are used to capture the light from ionized gases – hydrogen, oxygen, and sulfur. Multiple images are then stacked and combined in specialized software, creating an enhanced color image. In this case, hydrogen is red, sulfur is green, and oxygen is blue, known as the HSO palette. The Hubble Space Telescope uses a similar technique for many of its images.
