Using a large language model (LLM), the new artificial intelligence (AI) feature will analyze more than 250 million places on the Google Maps app and information from more than 300 million local 'experts' to generate recommendations based on what users are searching for.
Google Maps will generate category-specific suggestions based on the keywords users provide, combined with personalized listings that include photos and reviews. The new feature will be more interactive than the regular search feature.
Google says the feature can generate suggestions for even the most specific queries. Beta access to the new AI features will begin rolling out in the US.
The feature is expected to be available to a select number of local experts, part of a community of people who contribute reviews, facts, and photos to Google Maps to help other users gain insights about different locations.
The feature is expected to be rolled out to regular users in the near future. However, Google has not yet announced a list of countries that will receive the feature.
In October 2023, Google updated Maps to make the app more like a search engine, introducing various AI-powered features, such as photo search results and the ability to suggest specific locations when users type in general queries.
