The Lao Cai 500kV transformer station and the connecting 220kV lines were invested and built by EVN in Xuan Quang commune. The project aims to relieve the capacity of small hydropower sources in the Northwest region and neighboring provinces (Lao Cai, Ha Giang, Yen Bai ), supporting electricity imports when necessary. The project has a total investment of more than 1,500 billion VND.

Phase 1 of the project has built a 220kV distribution yard; the connecting 220kV lines will be completed by the end of 2023.
Phase 2 of the 500kV distribution yard construction is being implemented, including the following items: construction of transformer foundation and reactor foundation; construction of busbar truss; construction and installation of primary equipment (transformer, voltage transformer, current transformer); construction of secondary cable and connection; construction of internal roads and fire prevention and fighting.

To ensure project progress, the investor and contractor have closely coordinated with local authorities to promptly remove difficulties and obstacles in site clearance, facilitating the construction process.
To date, the contractor has completed the column foundations and installed the ceramic scaffolding. Items such as the station roads, drainage systems and cable trenches are also being constructed in a rolling manner.
The construction unit committed to completing the entire project by August 19, in sync with the 500kV Lao Cai - Vinh Yen transmission line project.
