On the afternoon of August 22, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment (MARD) held an urgent meeting to deploy early response work to the tropical depression that is preparing to enter the East Sea, which could strengthen into a storm and affect the mainland of our country.

At the meeting, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment Nguyen Hoang Hiep said that this morning (August 22), he discussed with the Director of the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting and found that, although this tropical depression is currently still located off the coast of the Philippines, it is forecast to enter the East Sea in the coming hours, then very quickly form a storm and move very quickly.

“This is a storm that formed right in the East Sea and is moving very quickly. If we do not prepare in advance and calculate carefully, it will be very dangerous...”, Deputy Minister Nguyen Hoang Hiep said.

According to Mr. Mai Van Khiem, Director of the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, this morning, this low pressure area has strengthened into a tropical depression with intensity of level 6, gusting to level 8.

It is forecasted that around tonight, the tropical depression will move into the East Sea, likely to strengthen into a storm, becoming the 11th storm in the Northwest Pacific region and the 5th storm in the East Sea (international name is Kajiki). When entering the East Sea, storm number 5 will move quickly, at a speed of about 20km/h.

It is forecasted that on August 24, when the storm moves to the Hoang Sa archipelago, its intensity may reach level 10-11, gusting to level 13-14, and may even strengthen when moving into the Gulf of Tonkin. On August 25, the storm will move to the mainland of our country.

“Exactly one month ago, storm No. 3 affected our country. This storm is similar, likely to affect the Thanh Hoa - Nghe An area and deep into this area. It is forecasted that this storm will likely impact further south than storm No. 3,” Mr. Khiem commented.

According to Mr. Khiem, the intensity of this storm may increase and move quickly. It is expected that next Monday (August 24) it may affect the mainland of our country. Therefore, it is expected that when this tropical depression enters the East Sea, the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting will immediately issue an emergency storm/tropical depression warning.

Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment Nguyen Hoang Hiep chaired a meeting to respond early to the tropical depression that is likely to strengthen into a storm.

With the current impact scenario, the storm's impact circulation is very wide, affecting the northern and north central coasts. The coastal area from Nghe An to Quang Tri will be the main area affected by the storm's circulation, with the possibility of strong coastal winds of level 10-11, gusting to level 13-14.

From the night of August 24 to the end of August 27, in the Thanh Hoa-Hue area, there will be a period of heavy to very heavy rain, with rainfall ranging from 150-300mm, in some places over 600mm.

A flood occurred on rivers from Thanh Hoa to Quang Tri. There is a risk of flash floods, landslides and inundation in low-lying areas, riverbanks, and urban areas in the provinces in the above region.

Localities need to proactively deploy flood prevention plans, check residents in dangerous areas, and ensure the safety of reservoirs and flood prevention works.
