From the 17th century to the present, Vietnam is the only country that has continuously and peacefully exercised sovereignty over the Hoang Sa and Truong Sa archipelagos. Right at the time of the liberation of the South and national reunification in 1975, the Vietnam People's Army took over the islands where the Republic of Vietnam army was stationed, and at the same time deployed forces to occupy a number of other locations in the Truong Sa archipelago.
