A zoo representative confirmed to local media that Denny, a 10-year-old gorilla being raised here, cracked the triple-layer tempered glass wall of the primate area on October 11.

Video posted on CBS8 news shows Denny suddenly rushing towards the glass wall, causing many tourists to panic, scream and run away.

Meanwhile, a few brave people lingered to observe the glass that had partially cracked after the strong impact.

Luckily, Denny was not injured in the incident. Both Denny and the other gorilla in the enclosure will be cared for by staff while the zoo replaces the damaged glass.

“Gorillas, especially males, often engage in what is known as a ‘show of force’ – a way to demonstrate dominance. Actions such as bursts of energy, sudden attacks, dragging objects or running around… are completely normal expressions of gorillas at this age,” the zoo spokesperson emphasized.

Denny lived with his brother, Maka. However, the 30-year-old gorilla died suddenly in August due to cardiac arrest, according to information from the zoo.

Dr. Erin Riley, an anthropologist at San Diego State University, said there were many factors that could have led to Denny's recent attack, including the grief over the sudden loss of his brother.

“Since I wasn’t there, I can’t say for sure what triggered Denny. However, what many tourists don’t know is that gorillas hate being looked at directly in the eye,” Riley said.

According to the zoo, Denny is one of the world's largest primate gorillas, with adult males weighing up to 227kg. However, the species is critically endangered due to deforestation in central Africa.

Known for its pioneering open-cage model, the San Diego Zoo creates natural, intimate habitats for animals while also leading the way in global wildlife research and conservation.

Not only is it an attractive tourist destination, it is also a symbol of the harmonious effort between humans and nature.
