- After more than a month of operating the AI-powered traffic surveillance camera system, thousands of violations have been recorded. The data from the system not only serves to process fines remotely but also clearly reflects the current state of traffic law compliance.
From April 16, 2026, the AI camera system managed by the Provincial Police officially began operating in four central wards: Luong Van Tri, Tam Thanh, Dong Kinh, and Ky Lua. Violation data is transmitted directly to the Provincial Police Command Information Center, then forwarded to the Traffic Police Department for verification and processing according to regulations.

After more than a month of operation, the AI camera system has recorded nearly 1,600 traffic violations. Of these, running red lights accounted for the highest percentage with approximately 1,190 cases; over 510 cases involved speeding; driving in the wrong lane, failing to obey road markings, and not wearing a helmet. After verifying vehicle information, the traffic police sent notices of fines to 1,480 violators.
According to traffic police assessments, the majority of current traffic violations indicate that the self-awareness of a segment of the population, especially motorcyclists, in complying with the Road Traffic Safety Law remains very limited.
To improve the effectiveness of detecting and handling violations, AI camera systems have assisted law enforcement in continuously monitoring traffic on many key roads and intersections. Lieutenant Pham Xuan Huy, an officer from Traffic Police Team No. 1, Traffic Police Department, stated: "Previously, handling violations at night or involving high-speed vehicles was difficult. However, now this system operates continuously 24/7, simultaneously recording multiple violations by a single vehicle, thus enabling more accurate enforcement."
In recent days, the number of people coming to process traffic violations based on notices issued remotely by the Traffic Police Department has increased.
Ms. Dang Ngoc Linh, residing on Hung Vuong Street, Luong Van Tri Ward, stated: "In mid-May 2026, I received a notice for violating a red light at the intersection of Quang Trung and Dinh Tien Hoang streets (Luong Van Tri Ward). This violation was due to my failure to pay attention to the traffic light signals. Now, I pay close attention and stop at the designated line when passing through intersections to ensure my own safety and the safety of those around me."
The use of AI-powered cameras to process traffic violations has initially enhanced the deterrent effect on road users. However, the system still records violations daily, mainly by motorcyclists and scooter riders, especially late at night or on deserted roads.
For example, at around 8 PM on May 19th, at the Tran Phu – Ba Trieu intersection (Ky Lua ward), even though the traffic light was red, a car still sped through the intersection. Just seconds later, the entire violation, along with the vehicle's license plate, appeared on the screen at the Provincial Police Command Information Center before being transferred to the Traffic Police Department's data processing center for verification and processing.
Lieutenant Colonel Phuong Thuc Dinh, Deputy Head of the Traffic Police Department, said: Through analyzing hotspots for red light violations, speeding, and hours when violations frequently occur, the department deploys task forces to set up checkpoints, conduct mobile patrols, and use undercover cameras to handle violations effectively and prioritize key areas, enhancing deterrence. At the same time, the unit continues to improve the synchronization of violation data with the National Population Database to ensure faster and more accurate notification of traffic violations.
In addition, traffic police forces are also coordinating efforts to promote traffic safety laws through digital platforms, local media systems, schools, and residential areas; using data from AI camera systems to warn of common violations in order to raise awareness of law compliance among road users.
According to Colonel Le Dang Khoa, Deputy Director of the Provincial Police, based on the initial effectiveness of the AI camera system in ensuring traffic safety and order, the Provincial Police will continue to review and propose investment in expanding the traffic surveillance camera system at key intersections, important areas, border gates, and routes where violations frequently occur, in order to improve the effectiveness of detecting, handling, and preventing traffic violations.
After more than a month of operation, the AI camera system has proven effective in assisting with the detection and handling of violations and improving traffic management efficiency. However, technology is only a tool to support monitoring; to foster a safe traffic culture, the most important thing remains the self-awareness and compliance with traffic laws by each individual.
