On April 17th, the People's Committee of Can Tho City held a working session with the My Thuan Project Management Board to discuss several issues related to the route study report and control points on the Can Tho 2 bridge project and the approach roads at both ends of the bridge.
The starting point of the Can Tho 2 bridge project will connect with the end point of the My Thuan - Can Tho expressway.
This project is the final piece of the North-South Expressway project in the eastern part of the Mekong Delta region.
The bridge will connect the My Thuan - Can Tho expressway and the North-South expressway (Eastern section) from Can Tho to Ca Mau (also known as the Can Tho - Ca Mau expressway).
From there, the national expressway backbone will be completed, ensuring continuous, high-speed transportation of large volumes of passengers and goods.
According to the pre-feasibility study report, the Can Tho 2 bridge is planned to be built downstream of the Hau River, approximately 4.5km from the existing Can Tho bridge.
The project's starting point connects to the Chà Và interchange in Vĩnh Long province (the end point of the Mỹ Thuận - Cần Thơ expressway). The end point connects to the IC2 interchange in Cần Thơ city (the starting point of the Cần Thơ - Cà Mau expressway project).
The project spans over 14km in length. The main bridge and approach spans are over 2.7km long, with four lanes. The main span is expected to be a cable-stayed bridge structure.
The total investment is estimated at approximately 19,782 billion VND from the State budget. The project is scheduled to commence in 2026 and be completed in 2030.
According to information from the My Thuan Project Management Board, at the meeting, the People's Committee of Can Tho City basically agreed on the route plan, the design scale of a complete four-lane road, a separate road from the railway, and the main bridge clearance being similar to the existing Can Tho Bridge.
At the same time, there were some suggestions related to the design options for medium and small bridges on the route, and research into elevated bridge options connecting the interchanges… ensuring synchronous connection with the local transportation infrastructure plan.
