Currently, dried coconuts are being purchased by traders at the farm gate for only 60,000 VND per dozen (12 coconuts), a decrease of 180,000 VND per dozen compared to the record price recorded in mid-September.
Mr. Thach Ngoc Dung's family, residing in Sa Binh hamlet, Long Duc ward, cultivates 0.6 hectares of coconut trees that are currently being harvested. Mr. Dung stated that from the beginning of 2024 to September 2025, the price of dried coconuts consistently remained high, averaging around 150,000 VND per dozen, sometimes exceeding 230,000 VND per dozen, much to the delight of the farmers. However, since the end of September, the price of dried coconuts has continuously dropped sharply, causing significant losses for coconut growers.
According to some traders, the main reason for the "plunging" price of coconuts is the reduced demand from processing facilities. Some businesses exporting coconut products such as activated charcoal, dried shredded coconut, and coconut fiber have also reduced production capacity due to slow market demand.
Mr. Van Huu Hue, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Vinh Long province, said: The province's coconut industry is facing a double impact from market fluctuations and climate change. To enhance the value of the coconut industry and create stable income for farmers, the local agricultural sector is implementing many solutions simultaneously; focusing on developing sustainable raw material areas, improving the quality of coconuts for deep processing, and promoting value chain linkage models between farmers, cooperatives, and businesses to ensure stable output for farmers. The province also encourages businesses to invest in deep processing of coconut products and expand the area of organic coconuts to increase competitiveness and mitigate risks when the market fluctuates.
Vinh Long province currently has over 120,000 hectares of coconut plantations, accounting for approximately 65% of the country's total coconut area. Coconut is identified as one of the six key national industrial crops, providing stable livelihoods for nearly 270,000 households. The province aims to expand the area to 132,000 hectares by 2030, with a production of over 1.5 million tons; of which, industrial coconut cultivation will reach over 108,000 hectares, serving processing and export.
