A strong transformation provides a solid foundation for sustainable agriculture.

The People's Committee of Vinh Long province announced that it is supporting 15 agricultural cooperatives in building exemplary models in accordance with Resolution 106/NQ-CP dated July 18, 2023, of the Government on the development of agricultural cooperatives associated with the restructuring of the agricultural sector and the construction of new rural areas. These are all cooperatives that operate effectively, are suitable to the specific characteristics of their respective sectors, regions, and local development conditions.

According to the People's Committee of Vinh Long province, selecting 15 exemplary cooperatives for focused investment is a practical step to improve the quality and efficiency of collective economic activities in a sustainable direction. These cooperatives are oriented towards promoting the application of science and technology, innovation, and digital transformation in the production, preliminary processing, processing, and consumption of agricultural products; prioritizing development linked to the green economy, circular economy, and adaptation to climate change.

Through exemplary models, the province expects to expand production scale, attract farmers, organizations, and individuals to participate in cooperatives; gradually making cooperatives a core socio-economic model in rural areas. This will contribute to improving agricultural productivity and quality, increasing people's income, protecting the environment, creating a foundation for attracting investment, and promoting the restructuring of the agricultural sector. To date, the total funding support for 15 cooperatives is over 21.3 billion VND from the state budget and legally mobilized sources.

These cooperatives operate in the fields of crop cultivation, livestock farming, aquaculture, and agricultural services, with over 4,100 members. Their main products include coconuts, rice, vegetables, green pomelos, durians, mandarin oranges, seedless lemons, cantaloupes, cattle farming, and clam farming. Many cooperatives are producing according to VietGAP, GlobalGAP, and organic standards; promoting the application of technology, establishing planting area codes, traceability systems, and developing OCOP products. In the first six months of 2025, the revenue of these cooperatives ranged from 150 million VND to 20 billion VND.

Applying advanced technology helps farmers rise to prosperity.

In Vinh Long, during the process of building new rural areas in localities, the application of high technology and digital transformation in agricultural production is becoming increasingly common. The Binh Hoa Phuoc Rambutan Cooperative (An Binh commune) is a typical example. Over the past three years, the cooperative has accelerated digital transformation from recording fertilizer use to establishing planting area codes. The cooperative has also intensified agricultural product transactions through e-commerce platforms and the provincial agricultural product exchange, helping to expand the consumer market and increase customer trust.

Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Nhan, Director of Binh Hoa Phuoc Rambutan Cooperative, said that applying Industry 4.0 technology has reduced production costs, resulting in high-quality, environmentally friendly agricultural products. Members of the cooperative are paying more attention to branding and product reputation.

In particular, many cooperatives in the province have linked up with large enterprises to guarantee the purchase of products from farmers. As a result, a series of clean, organic, and circular production models have been formed, becoming a highlight in the process of building model new rural areas in localities.

Another example is the Phuoc Hao Agricultural Cooperative (Hung My commune), which has gradually become familiar with modern production technology. According to the cooperative's director, Truong Hoa Thuan, they now spray pesticides using drones, sow seeds using cluster machines, and monitor pests and diseases through mobile applications. Farmers can stay at home and still know how many insects are in their fields today; if there are few, they don't need to spray, saving a lot of costs.

Examples of cooperatives applying science and technology to production in Vinh Long province, as described above, are no longer isolated cases. In fact, many farmers and cooperatives have equipped themselves with drones, cluster seeding systems, insect and emission monitoring equipment, etc. Now, with just a smartphone, cooperatives and farmers can monitor salinity levels, pest infestations, adjust irrigation water quantities, or plan crop care.

Over the years, Tan Phu Agricultural Service Cooperative (Phu Phung commune) has brought together many local people to cooperate in growing durian according to VietGAP standards; at the same time, it has linked with businesses from production to consumption to develop sustainably, helping many rural households rise to prosperity.

In its early days, Tan Phu Cooperative had 51 members, now boasting over 300 members and 320 hectares of cultivated land. The cooperative has also formed 8 service groups that both support members in durian cultivation and provide services elsewhere. To date, the cooperative has established 6 durian growing area codes and applied VietGAP standards to 200 hectares.

According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Diem, a member of Tan Phu Cooperative, she had cultivated durian for decades, but her income was only barely enough to live on, with little surplus due to spontaneous production leading to high investment costs and low selling prices. In recent years, she was encouraged to join the cooperative, where she participated in training courses on agricultural extension, gardening techniques, and access to VietGAP farming models. Using this knowledge, Ms. Diem redesigned her durian orchard to grow Ri6 variety, applying technical solutions supported by the cooperative and the agricultural sector.

To sell durian at a high price, Ms. Nguyen Thi Diem and other members of the cooperative cultivate off-season durian from September to February. During this period, the selling price of Ri6 durian ranges from 90,000 to 130,000 VND/kg, with a yield of 20 tons/ha. Each hectare of durian brings in billions of VND, a higher return than other crops. In the 2024 durian season, Ms. Diem cultivated 20 acres, harvesting approximately 24 tons and earning about 2.5 billion VND.

The development of new-style cooperatives operating effectively in Vinh Long province not only helps people link production more efficiently but also plays an important role in reorganizing agricultural production, creating jobs, and increasing income – one of the core criteria of the new rural development program.
