Early in the morning, dimly visible through the ethereal mist over Ha Long Bay , stand-up paddleboards (SUPs) glide gently across the water's surface, nestled among towering limestone mountains.
They weren't professional SUP enthusiasts, nor did they form a large, organized club. They were a small group of people from diverse professions: tourism workers, freelancers, photographers, engineers, civil servants, factory workers, and more, who took advantage of their days off to go SUP together.

Their common ground is a love for the sea and the feeling of "gliding" through the landscape of Ha Long Bay, a World Natural Heritage site. Photo: Nguyen Duong

Mr. Le Van Binh, residing in Ha Long ward, said that on weekends, if they can arrange the time, people excitedly call each other, with some even bringing their whole family to Ha Long Bay to go SUP surfing. Photo: Nguyen Duong

Each person brings their own surfboard, sail, and life jacket, then they meet up on the beach. What binds them together is not just the sporting thrill, but the unique experience that Ha Long Bay offers. Photo: Nguyen Duong

No engine noise, no tourist hustle and bustle, just the sound of the wind, the water, and their own breathing. At times, they stop in the middle of the bay, sit on a board, drift along, and admire Ha Long Bay and the majestic limestone mountains. Photo: Nguyen Duong

They remind each other to keep their distance from boats, not to litter, and not to trespass on sensitive areas of the heritage site. For them, paddleboarding in Ha Long Bay is not just a hobby, but also a way to learn to respect nature and slow down amidst the increasingly hectic pace of life. (Nguyen Duong)

According to SUP enthusiasts in Ha Long Bay, the demand for SUP and kayaking among locals and tourists is very high. It's not that they can't afford the equipment, but buying it themselves and transporting it back and forth each time is very inconvenient. If these services could be offered along the coastal road from Bai Tho Bridge to Hon Gai beach, it would create an attractive tourism product for visitors, an ideal recreational spot, and could provide year-round activity for local people.
