The story of fish bones turning into mountains by Thi Nai lagoon.

In the middle of the vast rice fields of Loc Ha village, Tuy Phuoc commune, Gia Lai province (formerly Tuy Phuoc district, Binh Dinh province), a towering rocky mountain suddenly rises. Seen from afar, the mountain looks exactly like a giant fish skeleton exposed in the flat landscape. Because of this unusual shape, the locals call the mountain by the simple and rustic name "Fish Skeleton Mountain."

However, the name doesn't just come from its external appearance; it's also associated with a legend passed down through generations by the people of Loc Ha. Having lived her entire life at the foot of the mountain, Mrs. Diep Thi Chau (93 years old, Loc Ha village) says that her ancestors have recounted stories since ancient times to explain the appearance of this unique rocky mountain.

According to legend, in the primordial era, when the sea encroached deep into the land, storms constantly raged, causing much suffering to mankind. Witnessing this, the Giant (a god from heaven) descended to earth to help humanity. He used his strength to move mountains and fill in the seas, creating new lands for people to live on.

When his work was finished, the giant stopped to rest by Thi Nai Lagoon. Hungry, he used earth and stones to build an embankment around the lagoon to catch fish. The fish there were abundant and fat, so he fished for many days and nights. After eating the fish, he piled up the bones into a large mound along the lagoon's edge. Over the years, this enormous pile of bones turned to stone, creating the strangely shaped mountain we see today.

That simple story is not only how the ancients explained the unique geological landscape, but also breathed life into the inanimate rock, turning it into a symbol of humanity's aspiration to conquer nature.

Amazing destination

Stepping out of the realm of legend, Xương Cá Mountain exists in real life like a giant miniature landscape. The mountain is not high, nor is it covered by forest, but its rough, sharp-edged rocks are enough to impress anyone who sets foot there for the first time.

Approaching closer, the mountain is formed from vertical rock formations stacked on top of each other as if built up. The rugged, sharp-edged rocks are not disjointed, creating a harmonious whole that is both wild and seemingly intentionally arranged. It is this unique feature that makes many tourists linger longer to observe each rock formation and each mountain shape.

From the low rocky paths, climbers can follow the crevices to ascend without the need for specialized equipment. The higher they climb, the more the space opens up. Before them are rice paddies stretching to villages and hamlets. Further in the distance is the shimmering surface of Thi Nai Lagoon, surrounded by rolling mountain ranges.

Without the hustle and bustle or crowded services, Xương Cá Mountain offers a rare sense of tranquility. According to Mr. Dương Văn Tư (57 years old, Lộc Hạ village), in recent years, more and more people have come to visit and take photos, especially during the rice harvest season. Not only tourists from within the province, but also some foreign visitors are curious to see firsthand the rock formation, likened to a fossilized fishbone mountain in the middle of the plain.

Mr. Thai Van Thuan, Vice Chairman of the Tuy Phuoc Commune People's Committee, said that there are many places in the commune with potential for tourism development, including Xương Cá Mountain. With its unique shape and solitary location in the plain bordering Thi Nai Lagoon, this mountain is considered to have many advantages for developing ecotourism associated with folk culture.

"Currently, the area already has several well-known tourist destinations such as Lang Song Minor Seminary, Long Phuoc Pagoda, and Binh Thai boat dock. In the future, the locality will conduct surveys and include prominent destinations in the planning, including Xuong Ca Mountain, in order to effectively exploit the potential and strengths for tourism development," Mr. Thuan said.
