What minerals should older adults supplement to prevent heart attacks?

As we age, the aging process makes it difficult for the body to absorb enough vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients from food. Some of these are particularly deficient in older adults, which can affect heart and nerve function.

One of the key factors in maintaining good health is a nutritious diet rich in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, lean meats high in protein, and healthy fats. However, aging reduces absorption, making older adults more susceptible to nutrient deficiencies.

Leafy green vegetables are one of the richest sources of magnesium.

A study published in the journal Nutrients found that magnesium is a mineral that older adults are more likely to be deficient in. This is because certain age-related changes make it difficult for the intestines to absorb magnesium.

Magnesium is important for the body because it contributes to more than 300 functions, from regulating heart rhythm and strengthening bone health to supporting nerve and muscle function. Adult men need at least 400 mg of magnesium per day, while women need 310 mg per day.

For older adults, magnesium is especially important because it helps reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes and bone fractures due to osteoporosis. Furthermore, magnesium can help prevent heart attacks, strokes, and cognitive decline.

One chronic condition that can lead to heart disease is high blood pressure. Over time, high blood pressure makes arteries more vulnerable to damage and plaque buildup. This plaque reduces blood flow to organs, potentially leading to heart attacks and strokes. Further details will be available on our health page on December 24th.

4 causes of knee pain that require treatment

The knee joint is one of the most important and weight-bearing parts of the body during movement. Any injury to the knee joint can significantly affect mobility. Pain is a common symptom indicating a problem with the knee joint.

We often focus on pain in the front of the knee. However, pain in the back of the knee is also a very important symptom. Sometimes, the cause of this pain in the back of the knee can be difficult to pinpoint.

A posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) injury can cause pain at the back of the knee.

The causes of pain behind the knee that people should not ignore include:

Muscle cramps. Muscle cramps are a very common problem. If cramps occur behind the knee, it's due to overuse of that muscle group. However, if cramps occur frequently, the cause could be nerve damage, a buildup of toxins in the body, or even tetanus.

Baker's cyst. Baker's cysts occur when the knee is injured, such as from arthritis or a torn cartilage. This injury causes an abnormal buildup of fluid, leading to the formation of a cyst. The cyst will put pressure on and cause pain behind the knee.

In a worst-case scenario, the cyst could rupture, causing severe swelling and pain in the knee. In that case, the patient needs to go to the hospital immediately. Further details of this article will be available on the health page on December 24th.

New research on cooking oil reveals something important.

New research shows that healthy cooking oils like avocado oil and olive oil offer numerous benefits, from improving cardiovascular health to reducing the risk of cancer.

Recent research has raised concerns about cooking oil, but Professor Timothy Yeatman, PhD, who works at the University of South Florida Cancer Institute and Tampa General Hospital (USA), asserts that research results do not show that cooking oil, including seed oils, can cause cancer.

The study authors assert that consuming seed oils in moderation remains healthy.

Research has shown that the problem stems from the fact that seed oils are high in omega-6 fatty acids, some of which can promote inflammation in the body. And inflammation can contribute to some types of cancer, such as colon cancer.

Regarding his research, Dr. Yeatman stated: "Consuming too much omega-6 leads to an excess of inflammatory mediators, creating an immunosuppressive environment for colon cancer. And I think that allows tumors to grow and spread."

To remedy this situation, according to Dr. Yeatman, supplementing with sufficient omega-3 fatty acids, which have anti-inflammatory effects, can counteract the harmful effects of omega-6. According to Mount Sinai Hospital (USA), general nutritional guidelines recommend an omega-6 to omega-3 ratio in the diet of 2:1 to 4:1.

When consumed in appropriate amounts, both omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids are unsaturated fats that are beneficial for cardiovascular health. That's why the American Heart Association states that seed oils can be part of a healthy diet. Omega-6 is also found in nuts, which are considered healthy. Omega-3 is commonly found in fish like salmon and some nuts. Start your day with health news to read more in this article!
