Breakthrough in Ha Tinh 's cancer treatment infrastructure

According to health sector statistics, Ha Tinh records more than 2,000 new cancer cases each year, many of which are in the advanced stages. At the Oncology - Nuclear Medicine Department of Ha Tinh General Hospital, each year there are up to 4,000 inpatients and about 14,000 people coming for examination, leading to great pressure on the need for intensive treatment. Before the radiotherapy system was installed, on average, the hospital had to transfer nearly 4,800 patients each year to the central level to access radiotherapy techniques, an important method in treating many types of cancer.

Patients receive radiotherapy in a high-quality radiotherapy area.

The problem of overcrowding, high travel and living expenses, and the fatigue of having to travel long distances make cancer treatment difficult for Ha Tinh people. Therefore, the construction of a high-tech radiotherapy area has become an urgent requirement.

Ha Tinh General Hospital invested in building a radiotherapy area on an area of 748.3m², with a synchronous infrastructure system including: CTSIM simulation room, TPS planning room, accelerator control room and linear accelerator room. This is the first cancer radiotherapy area in the province, opening a new milestone in on-site treatment capacity for patients.

At the heart of the treatment area is a multi-energy linear accelerator system with a 160-blade multi-leaf collimator, the most modern technology available today. This device allows precise focused radiation on the tumor, minimizing damage to healthy tissue, while shortening the time of each irradiation session. The application of modern technology helps patients reduce side effects, recover better and maintain quality of life during treatment.

Nuclear Medicine Oncologists monitor patients' radiation therapy in a high-quality radiotherapy facility.

In addition to equipment, the hospital has built a specialized patient management software system for radiotherapy, helping to standardize processes, limit errors and ensure safety in each treatment session.

The high-tech radiotherapy area currently has 3 radiotherapy specialists, 2 medical physicists and 5 technicians, all of whom have been thoroughly trained by experts from central hospitals, and have directly transferred techniques "hand-holding and guiding". Thanks to that, the staff quickly mastered the equipment and procedures, and operated the system stably as soon as it was put into operation.

Not only contributing to reducing the load on upper-level hospitals, Ha Tinh's new radiotherapy area also brings concrete results, improving the quality of life of many cancer patients.

Mr. VVV, 63 years old, from Luu Vinh Son commune, is one of the first patients to benefit from radiotherapy services in the province. Three years ago, he was diagnosed with lung cancer and treated in Hanoi . Recently, the disease has shown signs of metastasis to the brain, causing him to have frequent headaches, dizziness, loss of balance, memory loss and having to move around in a wheelchair.

From January 2025, on the doctor's recommendation, he was transferred to the Ha Tinh high-tech radiotherapy area for treatment. After 12 radiotherapy sessions, his condition improved significantly, his pain decreased, his memory and mobility improved, Mr. V. could walk and do daily activities without much support as before. His family said that being treated near home helped them significantly reduce travel costs, accommodation and psychological pressure.

Another case is Mr. D.TN, 62 years old, in Co Dam commune, was hospitalized with severe pain in the mouth and throat, difficulty speaking, poor appetite, inflammation of the floor of the mouth with discharge and unpleasant odor. The doctor diagnosed him with stage 4 oral floor cancer, with very limited response to previous chemotherapy.

In early March 2025, Mr. N. was assigned to receive concurrent chemotherapy and radiotherapy at the high-tech radiotherapy area. After only two weeks, his condition improved significantly, the area of inflammation and fistula decreased, the pain was greatly reduced, he could eat better and communicate more clearly. The tumor shrank on the examination image. This is one of many patients treated at the radiotherapy area and had positive results.

These initial results not only bring hope to individual patients, but also demonstrate the real effectiveness of investing in high-quality local healthcare infrastructure.

Reducing the burden of referrals, expectations for the future of cancer treatment in Ha Tinh

Dr. Le Van Dung, Deputy Director of Ha Tinh General Hospital, said that in the past, the unit had to transfer about 20,000 patients to higher-level hospitals each year, of which more than 4,000 were cancer patients. This not only put great pressure on central treatment facilities but also caused local patients many difficulties and costs.

"Putting the high-tech radiotherapy area into operation helps the hospital complete all cancer treatment methods, including surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy. Patients enjoy high-quality services right in the province, covered by Health Insurance according to regulations, minimizing costs and waiting time," said the leader of Ha Tinh General Hospital.

After 2 weeks of chemotherapy and radiotherapy, Mr. D.TN's health improved significantly.

In the context of increasing cancer rates and urgent need for access to modern treatment technology, Ha Tinh's initiative in building a radiotherapy area not only demonstrates the vision of the local health sector, but also carries profound humanistic value: providing timely treatment opportunities for people right in their homeland.

With a team of well-trained doctors, modern facilities and initial positive results, the High-Tech Radiation Therapy Area promises to become an important support for cancer patients in Ha Tinh province as well as neighboring areas.

The establishment of the first radiotherapy unit not only helps people enjoy more convenient and quality medical services, but also contributes to reducing the burden on central hospitals, improving the treatment capacity of provincial hospitals and opening up a new development direction for the Ha Tinh health sector in the future.
