Coastal breakwaters are seriously eroded

The recent storms have caused the breakwater roof of the Ta Nghen dike (Mai Lam village, Mai Phu commune, Ha Tinh province) to erode, break its structure, and collapse in large sections, making people very insecure.

At the scene, SGGP reporters recorded that the solid embankment built with paving slabs, concrete structures and rubble blocks had been damaged by the waves.

The landslide continues to spread and eat deep into the embankment. Many concrete blocks have been gouged out, threatening to collapse at any moment. Inside and at the foot of the embankment, layers of crushed stone and concrete slabs are scattered and mixed with rubbish.

According to people in Mai Lam village, this coastal breakwater plays a particularly important role for hundreds of local households.

Since being invested by the State, the embankment has contributed to preventing storms and waves, reducing the impact of high tides, helping people feel secure in production, stabilizing their lives and travel, and reducing difficulties in storm prevention.

Before the recent storm No. 5, there were some sections of the embankment that collapsed and had small landslides. People used sandbags, rocks, and cement blocks for temporary reinforcement.

However, when the storm made landfall, strong waves caused many sections of the embankment to seriously erode, posing a serious threat to the Ta Nghen embankment and people's lives.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Nghi is worried that the embankment will be eroded, collapsed, and seriously damaged.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Nghi (born in 1950, resident of Mai Lam village) said that thanks to this embankment, for many years now, people have not had to worry about high tides flooding their houses. But now, most of the embankment roof has been seriously damaged.

People hope that authorities at all levels will soon take remedial measures, especially in areas with severe landslides.

Mr. Nguyen Xuan Bac, Vice Chairman of Mai Phu Commune People's Committee, said that the coastal embankment through Mai Lam village was built around 2022-2023, but the impact of storm No. 5 damaged more than 150m.

This is a key project, directly protecting the lives and property of about 500 - 600 households in Mai Lam, Dong Thang, Dong Vinh and Hop Tien villages.

According to Mr. Nguyen Xuan Bac, the local government has requested the People's Committee of Ha Tinh province and relevant departments and agencies to pay attention, promptly support, and invest funds to overcome landslides on the embankment, to ensure the safety of the project and the Ta Nghen embankment, as well as to protect people's lives and property.

There are two options: if repairing and upgrading the areas of the embankment that have collapsed, sunk, or eroded, it will require financial support of about 400-500 million VND; if rebuilding the entire embankment, it will require support of about 2 billion VND.
