According to RT, the Italian National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) reported on June 2nd that the eruption of Mount Etna was likely caused by the collapse of a section of the crater structure located in the southeast.

According to the Toulouse Volcano Advisory Center, Mount Etna erupted, spewing lava and ash plumes reaching over 6,400 meters high, forcing several airlines to issue warnings to flights operating in the area. Some flights were delayed due to the ash cloud created by the volcano.

Videos recorded by hikers and tourists show many people panicking and fleeing the mountainside as they saw black smoke rising from the summit.

Media reports indicate that approximately 40 tourists were present when the volcano erupted, but all have since been evacuated to safety. No casualties have been reported.

A later official update stated that the ash eruption had ended on the afternoon of June 2nd.

However, authorities urged people to exercise "extreme caution" and stay away from areas surrounding the volcano due to the risk of unexpected eruptions.
