Dembele burst into tears. |
"What I just experienced is extraordinary. I don't know how to describe my feelings right now," Dembele said on the podium receiving the Best Men's Player award from France Football.
"This award comes after a great year with PSG. I am proud of what I have done in my career. Before that, I never set a goal to win the Ballon d'Or, but I did it today," Dembele burst into tears, and thanked his family, who were always by his side during the most difficult times.
"The Ballon d'Or is always a special award. I will never forget this moment," the PSG star concluded his speech.
Dembele became the 6th French player in history to receive this honor, after Raymond Kopa, Michel Platini, Jean-Pierre Papin, Zinédine Zidane and Karim Benzema. In addition, he also brought the 2nd Ballon d'Or to PSG's trophy room, after Lionel Messi.
2024/25 was an extraordinary season for Dembele. The striker scored 35 goals, adding 16 assists. The former Barcelona star's performances helped PSG win the Champions League, Ligue 1, the National Cup, the French Super Cup and the European Super Cup.
Dembele had earlier won the Ligue 1 player of the year award, as well as being named in the team of the season. This came after he finished as the league's top scorer with 21 goals in 29 games.
